COMPETITIONS
FESTIVAL BEGINS TO-DAY A total of 1956 entries have been received for the twenty-fifth annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society, which will commence this morning with the junior piano solo at the Civic Theatre, and the girls' recitation at the Caledonian Hall. Boys' and girls' songs in character and a barefoot dance contest will be juc'ged at the Civic in the afternoon, and children's operatic dance and humorous recitation at the Caledonian Hall. The official opening ceremony will be performed by the Mayor qt 7.30 to-night at the Civic Theatre. The programme will include: —Song in character, boys and girls under 16; recitation, girls under 12: humorous character sketch, ladies; song in character, ladies; boys' humorous recitation; ballet of 12 performers; tap dancing, and 20 minutes' entertainment by groups of performers. The entries are apportioned among the following classes: —Elocution 49(1, vocal GGI, instrumental 204, fancv dancing 340, national dancing 195. The judges are Mr Will Hutchens, Mus'. Boc., Wanganui "'vocal and instrumental); Mr It. T. Bush, Greymouth (elocution); and Mrs R. Triggs. Timaru (fancy and national dancing*. The official accompanist will be M:?s A. Harley Slack, the stage manager Mr H. Sweney. and Mr T. F. Hall is secretary. The competitions will be held at tiie Civic Theatre until May 29, and at the Caledonian Hal) until May 25. On May 30 and 31. and June 1, demonstration concerts will bo given at the Civic Theatre
