DEATH AT GASWORKS
INQUEST HELD AT TLMAIUJ (SPBriA!. ?0 THE TIMARU, May 10. A verdict that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning was given to-day by Mr A. Lawrence Gee, coroner. at the inquest into the death of Thomas James V-'hlte, who was found unconscious yesterday on a purifier valve at the Timaru gasworks. _ The coroner added that from the evidence given it would appear that White had been working at the handhole in the pit without having carried out the company's rule requiring a gas-mask to be worn. Robert Cody Gillespie, an employee of the company, said that men were permitted to enter the pit to examine the valves provided there were no traces of a leakage, in which case it was the rule of the company for anyone to be accompanied by another employee, and, if necessary, to wear gas masks. Dr. C. S Fraser ->ave evidence that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Henry B. Courtis, assistant-engineer, said he could think of no reason why White entered tha pit alone to make ihe adjustments.
