ACCIDENTS
CAR CRASHES INTO SHOP MUCH DAMAGE DONE Considerable damage was done to a grocery shop at the intersection of Rolleston street and Worcester street yesterday morning when a saloon car crashed into its front door. The Rolleston street frontage of the shop, which is rented by Mr H. G. Smout, of 71 Hawford road, was entirely wrecked. The window was broken, and the base of tiles demolished and the heavy door-jamb was wrenched from its foundations. Goods which had been on display in the window were strewn over the footpath. The driver of the car was Mr B. J. Lamb, of 76 Westenra street, Avonside, and his car crashed into the shop when it slewed over after a glancing collision with a smaller car driven by Mr W. Chamberlain, of 951 Colombo street. The shop is owned by Messrs J. and E. Brown, and was recently remodelled by Mr Smout, who took possession about a month ago. The driver of the car was unhurt, but his car had one wheel smashed, the radiator broken, and other damage done to it. None of the windows in the car was shattered, but one was cracked. SERIOUS HEAD INJURIES E. G. Simons, of 9 Peacock street, received severe head injuries when the motor-cycle he was riding in Durham street north, collided with a bicycle at about 6.25 last evening. Simons was travelling in the same direction as the cyclist, J. Barter, of 13 Abberley road, and the front wheel of the motor-cycle struck the rear wheel of the cycle. Barter suffered only a slight injury to a shoulder, but Simons fell oh his head. He was unconscious when taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital and is on the seriously ill list. MAORI BURNED TO DEATH (FBl** ASSOCIATION TiI.CORAM.) HAMILTON, May 10. Trapped in his whare, an elderly Maori was burned to death at Gordonton last evening. The victim, Hone Panma, aged 79, lived alone in the whare. He had been bedridden for 12 months and was last seen at 3 o'clock last evening, when a relative saw him in bed with a lighted candle alongsido him. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. FATAL INJURIES (prsss a»socia?iob riLnaiuM.i MASTERTON. May 10. Walter Jolly, aged 22, was knocked off his bicycle by a motor-truck in High street" Masterton, last evening, and died in hospital early this morning. FOUND DEAD IN BED iriicss absolution TEi.r.csiAu.i HASTINGS. May 10. Frank William Scott, aged 30, married, employed as a chef at the Hastings Hotel, was found dead in bed yesterday afternoon. An inquest was opened to-day. Scott had been employed at the hotel for the last 15 months. He was a patient in hospital some time ago for six weeks, suffering from an internal complaint. FALL FROM QUARRY FACE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TBI.BOUAU.> NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10. Falling over a high face of a quarry at a Public Works camp at Uruti today, George Wilson, aged 45, was killed instantly. He was a married man with two children. WOMAN FATALLY INJURED (pmm association rßLSonAii.i AUCKLAND, May 10. Shocking injuries to the head, which proved instantly fatal, were received by a widow, Mrs Jessie Addis, aged 71. when she was run over by a motortruck in the city. Mrs Addis, who lived in Pukekohc, was visiting Auckland for the day. The motor-truck, which emerged from Lower Commerce street to cross Customs street, was driven by L. J. Munro, of Onehunga. j Mrs Addis was walking along Customs street, in the direction of the railway station, and was crossing lower Commerce street when she was struck. The accident was seen by a newsboy, who was on the opposite side of the street. He said that as Mrs Addis was crossing, she dropped a bag she was carrying and stopped to pick it up. As she started walking again, the front part of the truck struck her, knocking her down. She fell partly beneath the truck and one of the twin rear wheels passed over her head, causing instant death.
