CERTIFICATE FOR BRAVERY
♦ AWARD MADE TO YOUNG MAN In recognition of his heroic action in saving a woman from drowning in the Waitaki river on January 30 at the risk of his own life, Albert Robert Nash, a young man aged 21 years, of Waitaki Hydro, was presented with a framed letter of commendation from the Royal Humane Society at the society's rooms in Gloucester street yesterday afternoon. Mr F, I. Cowlishaw, a member of the court of directors, made the presentation in the unavoidable absence of the president (Canon W. S. Bean), and there were also present Sir Cyril Ward .and Mr W. H. Nicholson, members of the court of directors. Mr Cowlishaw said that the Humane Society of New Zealand had been formed in the year 1898, and that in December of the same year Queen Victoria had granted the use of the word "Royal" to be incorporated in the title. Since then nearly 800 awards had been made by the-society, but in no case was an award made without fullest investigation into the circumstances of the resuce by the court of directors. The directors had considered that in this case Mr Nash had risked his own life, and had fully earned the certificate.
