KENNEL NOTES

[By CALEB.] [Queries for answer in this column should bo Addressed to "Caleb," care "The Press," Christchurch, and to ensure publication on any Saturday must bo received not later than tba Wednesday preceding.] The attractive young Pekingese bitch, Kong, owned by Mrs P. Mansell, Christchurch, has recently beer? on a stud visit to Mrs U. Jones's well- ', known dog, Windermere Chong Himself. . , Mr E. Jamieson, Christchurch, has purchased from Mrs P. Somon, Hoon Hay, a very promising dark brindle Scottish Terrier puppy. He is sired by that splerfcid dog, ch. Totteridge McDuff, from Ros"emoyne Felecia. Mr . Jamieson, who is an old English Setter fancier, now includes in his favour the popular Scottie. : Miss Betty Poff, of Styx, has disposed of a blue roan Cocker dog puppy, nine months old, by Skipper of Clifton from Susanne of Styx, to Miss Prime, Christchurch. The new owner 1 is most pleased with her purchase. Miss B. Barrow, Christchurch, has had the misfortune to lose her promising Bulldog, Duke of Stratmore, from the effects of distemper. Duke was purchased from Mrs H. S. Mitchell, the well-known Bulldog breeder. On a recent visit to the kennels of Dr. A. Smith Morton, Oamaru, the writer saw two exceptionally fine young Scottish Terriers—one, a dog puppy by Rouken Emigrant (imp.) from Ornsay Posie (imp.), and the other, a young bitch puppy by Ornsay Barty (imp.) from Cumbrae Heather (imp.). These two youngsters will, no doubt, be well to the fore in the show ring during the coming season. Dr. Smith Morton tells me that he is expecting a litter from his good Scottish Terrier bitch Cumbrae Kimmer (imp.), and that two others, Cumbrae Ailsa and Ornsay Posie. are shortly to be mated to Rouken Emigrant (imp.). Mrs V. N. Donaldson, of the Selkirk Kennels, Oamaru, reports that her Collie bitch, Judith of Selkirk (Rosyth Reflection—Emsley Model) will be sent to Milton shortly to be mated to ch: Rajah of Lochiel. The last litter from this outstanding bitch was disposed of very quickly. One bitch puppy went to Mr G. W. Dennis, Invercargill, and was first in her class at the last show held there. Mr J, Smith, of Oamaru, a new enthusiast! took a dog, and one of the same sex was secured by Mr T. McCone, Ngapara, near Oamaru. A bitch puppy, Fiona of Selkirk, was successful at both the last Oamaru and Timaru shows, and is being retained by her breeder. Jennifer of Selkirk is rapidly improving and, no doubt, will make her presence felt at forthcoming shows. She is shortly to pay a stud visit to Rajah of Lochiel. Mrs I. M. Wheeley, Christchurch, has a litter of Cocker puppies, four dogs and two bitches, from Derby Nessa by Braevil Brill, now dead. This litter is of particular interest to the breeder, as the sire and dam in a pre. vious mating produced that most pro-

mising dog, Derby Dillon, who unfortunately died from distemper while still under 12 months old. The dog puppies are showing great promise of becoming young "Dillons." An enthusiastic Bulldog breeder, Mr T. V. Cooke, owner of the Alswel Kennels, Christchurch, informs me that he has now disposed of his stud dog, Ohau Golden Hope, to Mr H. F. Robinson, South Westland, who is well pleased with his purchase. Before going to his new home. Golden Hope was mated to two kennel mates. Alswel Lady Atherton and Princess Marina. Mr Robert Conn, Christchurch, has disposed of an attractive Cairn Terrier bitch by his Earlswood Jock and Earlswood Tessa, both lately, imported from England, to Mr C. B. Burns, Christchurch. It was inadvertently stated in the notes of last week that the Cairn Terrier bitch, Cumbrae Lou, owned by 1 Mr W. H. Wylie, Oamaru, is nursing two puppies to Sam of Eaton (imp). Sam is the sire of Cumbrae Lou, and ; Rosemoyne Rambler, the property of Mrs P. Simon, is the sire of Lou's puppies. It would seem that Sealyham Terriers are growing in popularity, for Mr F % G. Saville is disposing of his puppies almost more quickly than he can breed them. He has recently disposed of dog puppies to Mr E. Denny, Dunedin; Miss Brownlee, Auckland; Mrs Len Hudson, Roslyn, Dunedin; and Miss Betty Webb, Christchurch. Canterbury Gun Dog Club The annual meeting of the Canterbury Gun Dog Club will be held in the Canterbury Automobile rooms, Worcester street, Christchurch, on Monday, February 25, at 8 p.m. Purgative Medicine A dose of purgative medicine judiciously administered is a good remedy for many minor complains, and often makes what looks like being a very sick dog into a healthy one. Castor oil is a good household remedy, but causes constipation afterwards if continued for long; but in cases of diarrhoea, when it is necessary to clear the bowel of any irritating matter, there is nothing better than castor oil. The dose varies from *half a teaspoonful to two tablespoonfuls. When the dog is showing signs of abdominal pain, from *three to 15 drops of laudanum may be added to the dose. As a mild aperient mixture, which has no bad after effects, the following given in doses from "half a teaspoonful to two tablespoonfuls, fasting in the morning, is very good. Equal parts of castor oil, syrup of buckthorn, and salad oil well mixed together. For little dogs suffering from constipation from half to a teaspoonful of salad oil mixed daily with the food answers well. Underdone or raw liver is relaxing, while boiled brains are almost purgative with small dogs. Some dogs may refuse to take their food with oil in it, in which cases fluid magnesia is a mild laxative, and one, two. or three teaspoonfuls may be given with a little milk at breakfast time. In cases of skin disease, when purgative medicine is necessary, Epsom salts is the best. The dose varies from *ls grains to one ounce, given in some sweetened milk. • According to the size of the dog.

London had 25 air-raids during the Great War, in which altogether 922 bombs were dropped* 524 persons were killed and 1264 injured".
