personal; At the monthly meeting of the Sumner Surf Life-Saving Club, the opportunity was taken of making a presentation to Mr W. S. Burford, who has resigned his position as treasurer of the club owing to his transfer to Whangarei. In presenting Mr Burford with an engraved oak tray and a pyrex dish on a silver stand, Mr Bassett referred to Mr Burford's wholehearted work as an executive officer over a considerable period, for the bulk of the time as treasurer. He said that Mr Burford would be greatly missed and expressed the hope that it would not be long before he would return to Sumner.

Several other members also expressed their regret at Mr Burford s impending departure. Mr Burford thanked the members of the club for their gift, and said that one of his chief regrets at leaving was the necessity of severing his connexion with the club. He expressed the hope that it would continue to prosper. Life-Saving Mr S. K. Bassett presided over a meeting of the Sumner Life-Saving Club on Tuesday evening. The action of the sub-committee set lip to make arrangements for a beach patrol was approved and the appointment of S. B. Mason was confirmed. The resignation of Mr W. S. Burford from the position of treasurer was received owing to his transfer to Whangarei. The vice-captain, Mr D. M. Richardson, was appointed to fill the vacancy, and Mr K. J. Lowry was elected vice-captain. The arrangements for the visit of the St. Clair team from Dunedin were discussed. The secretary stated that the date of the visit had been fixed for February 3. Miss Fender's School The breaking-up party of Miss Pender's Kindergarten School was held during the week. A very happy time was spent in games and dancing, and a concert presented by the pupils was greatly enjoyed. The children present, each of whom received a prize, were Bob Allen, Ruth Gorton, Leslie Matson, Toni Archer, Wendy Cameron, Margaret Steel, William Nicholson, Tony Miles, Ronald Thompson, Bruce Ford, Thomas Johnson, Errol Hanna, Raymond Carver, Peter Robertson, Bruce Newburgh, Mary Twomey, and Michael Twomey. Tennis The first of the series of "vanishing tea" evenings was held this week in the pavilion, when a very enjoyable social evening was spent. Additional results in the Sumner Club's events are as follows: — 1 Women's Handicap Doubles —Miss Thomas and Mrs Bell-Syer (minus 30 2-6) beat Misses D. Alexander and Martin fscr), by default; Mrs Brooke and Miss J. Turner (minus 15 2-6) beat Misses Whitfield and Hampton (plus 3-6 15), 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Women's Handicap Singles—Miss .T. Turner (minus (3-6 15) beat 'Miss Martin (scr), by default. Men's Handicap Doubles —Webb and Wilson (minus 30 3-6) beat Browne and Huston (minus 40), 7-5, 7-5.

School Concert Before the prizes were presented at the break-up of the Sumner District High School in the Town Hall, the large audience was treated to an excellent concert programme, the main item of which was a one-act play, "Apartments To-Let," by the scholars of the secondary department. The humorous character of the item was well sustained by the following:—Roma Reid, Laurie Dawe, Thyra Hill, Yvonne Webb, Phyllis Harvey, and Geoffrey Fee. Pat Stevens sang a solo accompanied by Mr L. Shand, two partsongs were rendered by a small but very efficient choir under Mr Rice, and a recitation was given by P. Cant. Secondary Scholars' Carnival To raise funds for the school, the secondary scholars of the Sumner District High School organised a very successful carnival before the school closed and attracted to their grounds a good attendance of parents and pupils. The inclusion of a baby show in the programme greatly increased the interest in the function and the help accorded by the parents was of great value. Among the stalls were those for afternoon tea, produce, cakes, Aunt Sally, side shows, a special picture show by Maurice Otley, and a wizard's den. The cooking was judged by Mrs H. Buttle and Miss T. Gebbie, the results being:—Norma Fee 1, David Mouldey 2. The baby show resulted as follows:—-Under six months, Billie Smith; under 12 months, Peter Thompson; under 18 months, Terise Doherty. The prizes were presented by the wife of the headmaster, Mrs H. M. Stevens.
