NEW BRIGHTON NOTES

* METHODIST NEWS Special preparation has been made for the musical portions of the service to be held in the Methodist Church to-morrow evening. Miss Aileen Warren will play the accompaniments, and carols will be included in the festival.

The preacher will be the Rev. S, Bailey. Collingwood Club

Mrs C. Thompson was hostess at the final evening of the Collingwood Social Club, held at her residence, Heppel street. Mr B. Rice assisted with the programme of games and competitions. The winners were Mrs A. Weir, Mr C. Kerr, Mrs D. Henderson, Miss H. Cockle, and Mr B. Rice. Those present were Mesdames C. Thompson, S. Adams, A. Weir, A. E. Cockle, A. Hastings, Misses S. Scott, M. Rice, H. Cockle, Messrs C. Thompson, B. McKenzie, C. H. Stokes, R.Campbell, B. Rice, D. Grafton, C. Kerr, and A. J. Cockle. Chrysanthemum Club The flower show to be held in the new year in connexion with the Methodist Church is already being prepared for by the officers of the Chrysanthemum Club. At the last meeting the resignation of the Rev. S. Bailey as president was accepted With regret. and Mr J. W. Hull was elected to fill the vacancy. Social Evenings The bowling club held its progressive whist evening in the club pavilion on Tuesday. Prizes were won by Mrs C. Christie, Mrs R. Smith, and Mrs R. Bach. The winners at euchre at the weekly evening of the local subbranch of the Returned Soldiers' Assoc '-ition were Mesdames Spencer and Saunders and Messrs G. Brunton and A. Taylor. The music for the dance was played by Mrs H. Ross-Smith, assisted by .Mr F. Arnold, and Mr R. J. Potter wa". master of ceremonies. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr and Mrs E. Martin. The lucky numbers in the Christmas competition were 3950, 2743, 3160, and 3314. Sailing The following members of the Pleasant Point. Yacht Club have accepted the invitation of the South Canterbury, Yacht Club to take part in the regatta to be held at Timaru during the holidays:—L. Mellor (Desiree), E. Rountree and R. Christie (Ramona), W. Treleaven. J. Moir, and R. Fraser (Alerte), O. R. White and A. Tyson (Maimi). The invitation offered free transport for eight craft and billets for 10 men for 10 days. The club members will leave for Timaru on Monday. NORTH BEACH PERSONAL Mr and Mrs A. Tanner and family (Armagh street), who have been staying at Fleming street for a few months, have returned home. Mrs H. Jones (Hastings) is spending the Christmas holidays with her sister, Mrs W. Leverett (Bowhill road). Mr -and Mrs Henry Warden (Jubilee avenue) will leave to-day on a holiday visit to their daughter, Mrs W. B. Clark (Ashburton). Mr and Mrs J. Gudgeon and family (Osborne terrace) are spending the holidays at Selwyn huts. Mr and Mrs J. McArthur (Denniston, West Coast) are staying at Marriott's road for the holidays. Mrs G. Howard (Osborne terrace) is spending the Christmas holidays with her mother, Mrs Le Messurier (Halswell). Miss Molly Norrie arrived from Taumaranui yesterday to spend the Christmas holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs' F. S. Norrie (Bowhill road). Messrs G. W. and A. A. Aitken (Gisborne) will arrive on Monday on a visit to their parents, the Rev. G. K. Aitken and Mrs Aitken (Bowhill road). Gala for North Beach The New Brighton Borough Council has granted permission to hold a gate at North Beach on Saturday, January 26. There has been no gala in North Beach for two years, and a strong committee of members of the Surf Club and the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade is being formed to carry out the arrangements. The first general meeting will be held in the Surf Club's pavilion on Thursday, Thomson Park Rotunda The official opening of the band rotunda erected in Thomson Park has been arranged for Sunday, January 13. The arrangements for the ceremony have been entrusted to the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association. The New Brighton Municipal Band will supply the music. Appointment as Headmaster Mr F. J. Laurence Scott has received an appointment as headmaster of the Ongarue School, North Island, and will take up his new duties in February, Mr Scott has been on the teaching staff of the New Brighton District High School for a number of years. He has taken a keen interest in a number of associations in New Brighton, and his departure will be a decided loss to the borough. He was a member of the Borough Council for two years, has been an active member of the North Beach Surf Club, taking special interest in the training of young members. He was also a hard worker on the Progress League, holding the office of secretary for many years. Mr Scott c f wa Faith's keenly interested in St. Daiths Church, and has been a lay reader in the church. Social Evening The weekly dance and euchre party organised by the Aranui Hall Committee, held on Thursday, was very successful. Music was played by Holland's Band, and Mr G. K. McCraw was master of ceremonies. Messrs E. Rouse and W. T. Lean were in charge of the cards. The winners were Mesdames A Nankiville and E. Ormandy, Messrs H. Robinson and R. D. Martin.
