five years' medal; Fireman W. Geay-1 ley, five years' medal; Fireman W. Harvey, J. Garner,- and E. Poulsen, three years' certificates. j Fire Brigade Banquet Visiting firemen from all parts cl Canterbury, as well as members and honorary members of the brigade, were present at the annual banquet held by the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade at the fire station on Saturday night. The earlier part of the evening was occupied in dancing, and the banquet which followed was held in the basement. Superintendent R. Carson presided. The following toasts were honoured: "The King," "The Lyttelton Borough Council," proposed by Superintendent R. Carson and responded to by the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester), Cr. A. T. E. j Miller (chairman of fire prevention committee), and Crs. R. Fenton; the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade, proposed by the Mayor and responded i to by Superintendent R. Carson; "The | Visitors," proposed by Fireman A. Large, and "The Press," proposed by Fireman R. Maulden. In proposing the toast of "The Lyttelton Borough Council," Superintended Carson said the council and brigade had always worked amicably together, and the council had never refused any reasonable request of the brigade. At the present time there was a proposal for the purchase of a motor fire pump to replace the present fire-truck. At the last fire in Lyttelton the brigade was handicapped by lack of water. There were several weak spots in the water supply system, as it applied to fire-fighting, and residents of several parts of the town would be surprised to know that they were living in false security. It was true that there was ample water in the reservoirs, but it was the reticulation that was the trouble. Hie water service was laid 50 years ago, and was inadequate" for the present needs ofthe brigade. In reply to the toast the Mayor said he was sorry that the chairman of the waterworks committee of the council was not present. There was, as the superintendent had stated, plenty of water, but in some parts of the town it could not be supplied at sufficient pressure for the brigade's purposes. Cr. Miller said there was not very much wrong with the water supply, but it was not quite as good as it could be. He hoped that before the expiration of his term of office in about nine months, the purchase of the motor-pump would be accomplished. Cr. Fenton said that, as a former fireman, his, sympathies were entirely with the brigade, and he would always support any proposal for the benefit of the brigade. During the evening itertis were given as follows; Violin solos, Miss Freda Moir; songs, Messrs W. and A. Couch. The were played by Mrs G. Brooke. Music for the dancing was played by Mr J.
