CRACKER NOT KARAKA CREEK

TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir,—l noticed in the report of the last meeting of the Waipara County Council that a certain creek between Waikari and Hurunui is called Karaka Creek. The late Mr John James Thomson told me that the correct name of this stream is Cracker Creek, so called from the fact that in tne early days the drovers taking cattle from Canterbury to the West Coast over the Hurunui Saddle found that the best flax for making crackers grew in this creek. Karaka is the name of a native tree, but I doubt very much if karakas grew in this locality.—Yours, etc., M. BETHELL. Pahau Pastures, June 21, 1934.
