MEETING OF COUNCIL A meeting of the council of the ! United Burgesses' Association was held , on Tuesday evening, Mr A. E. Peverill presiding. Present were: Messrs A. H. , Campbell, J. T. Prouting, S. W. Richardson, G. T. Baker, G. E. Franklin, R. B. Dalley, J. Adcock, L. Scuff ell, and J. Stewart (secretary;. The Town Clerk (Mr J. S. Neville) advised, in reply to an enquiry, that the City Council had instructed its inspectors as far as possible to see that cyclists complied with the traffic regulations. The council had definitely decided not to proceed further in making a by-law to provide that drivers of vehicles should give way to cyclists on their right at intersections. • Replying to a request for information concerning the completion of the widening of Stanmore road, the Town Clerk advised that this work would be considered when the estimates for the year were being prepared. Replies to an enquiry concerning the methods of refuse collection in other cities were received from Auckland and Dunedin. The Dunedin town clerk advised that the cost of refuse collection varied in different localities, but the average, cost, including disposal, was 6s 6d a ton. The total cost shown by the • Auckland returns was 17s 4d a ton. A member remarked that it was difficult to draw conclusions from these , costs, as other cities might have a . different system from that followed in ' Christchurch. ana the refuse collectors might not pick up refuse that was collected in Christchurch. The chairman reported concerning the work of the unemployment com-' mittee, and the members commended I the action cf the Waimakariri River! Trust in putting men on at full rates! of pay.
