Edwin Payne, aged eight, had one leg almost, completely taken off and the other severed below the knee when dragged by an endless wire rope through a pulley at the Hikurangi coal mine last evening. The boy and a companion were sitting on the rope when the engine started to take empty skips down the mine. He was operated on in hospital and his condition is satisfactory.
