The income exceeded the expenditure for the year by £9O and, while (his had meant a drain on the revenue acount to cover depreciation, the result was regarded as at least reasonably satisfactory in view of the difficulties of the year. The report states that for reasons of health Sister May found it necessary to retire from the position of matron of the Girls' Home at Shirley, which she had occupied for 1(5 years with conspicuous ability. Miss E. M. Edwards had taken her place. At the Boys' Home at Timaru Mr S. Razell Wood was doing excellent work as rector. ''Both homes have been improved considerably during the year," says the report. "Laundry accommodation, water supply, heating, and redecoration are among the items which have added to the comfort and ease of working of the institutions. Their capable management is reflected in the appearance of the children, who are happy, healthy, and well behaved. The guild has good reason to be proud of them. "The sterling eil'orts of our many friends who sacritice time and energy in their continuous efforts to provide for the children have carried us through a very anxious period. When a generous and sympathetic public was responding to the urgent calls of the unemployed and other organisations we were not forgotten. The policy of funding our legacies has been continued and the endowment fund is steadily growing. Many economies have been effected, and the condition of our accounts for the year is a

credit to Mr A. G. S. Gibbs, the organising secretary and treasurer, and those who have worked with him. The guild dedres to express again its appreciation of the help given by those loyal friends to whose efforts our success is largely due." The statement of income and expenditure shows that £2884 6s 2d had been spent on the Girls' Home and £2068 8s on the Boys' Home. General expenses totalled £1416 0s Id and depreciation is set down at £IO2B Is lOd. Subscriptions and donations totalled £2722 19s, maintenance fees £llsO lis 6d, while the proceeds of the 1932 fair were £1069 18s 7d. The total debit on the year's working, including the allowanc; for depreciation, is £937 15s iid..
