KEEPING AUSTRALIA WHITE.
ARCHBISHOP'S SUGGESTION BARGAIN WITH GERMANY ADVOCATED. BRISBANE, July 11. After referring to the defenceless position of Australia, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, the Most Rev. Dr. James Duhig, suggested that Australia should seek help from some European country in retaining the continent for the white race. For instance, Germany might be allowed to have back her pre-war territory in New Guinea, conditionally on contributing adequate ships and men to Australia's defence. "If we cannot hold Australia ourselves, then we must get others to help us do it, or be prepared to lose it," said Dr. Duhig, speaking at a Communion breakfast. Mr Justice Webb, who had spoken earlier, and compared the ,ize of New Zealand with the archdiocese of Brisbane, had remarked facetiously that all New Zealand could be put into the archdiocese, and there would still be something left for Japan. This was a tilt at the recent suggestior of the Dean of Canterbury (the Very Rev. Hewlett Johnson) that a portion of Northern Australia should be ceded to Japan. Dr. Duhig said: "While not endorsing the Dean of Canterbury's plan, I think that something must be done, and quickly, if we are to hold Australia for the white race. A treaty might be made with any other European power desiring possessions in the Pacific, where the British Empire and the Commonwealth should remain in supreme control." HEAVY OBLIGATION ON AUSTRALIA. JUSTIFYING POLICY. (Received July 11, 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, July 11. The "Manchester Guardian," referring to the White Australia controversy, says that the question the Dean of Canterbury raised was, who would do the developing of the Northern Territory—Australians or others. The only way a White Australia could be justified was by reversing the present flow of population to the swollen cities, with the object of profitably employing the vast lands for which the Commonwealth was trustee. OPENING UP NORTHERN TERRITORY.
GOVERNMENT'S PLANS. (Received July 11, 11.50 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 11. Mr J. G. Latham, Acting-Prime Minister, says that the Commonwealth Government is at present considering methods of developing the Northern Territory by an extension of railway facilities from Queensland, opening up huge tracts for selection.
