GOODS TRANSPORT.

COMPLAINT BY WELLINGTON CITY CARRIERS. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, July 3. A complaint was made by city carriers to the No. 6 Licensing Authority to-day that the Railways Department and long-distance carriers from Palmerston North and Masterton were delivering goods from their centres to numerous places in the city. They suggested the establishment of a depot where long-distance goods could be left for distribution by city carriers. The chairman of the licensing authority (Mr G. A. Troup) suggested that the interested parties confer and make a report later in the afternoon. Mr Troup asked the manager of the New Zealand Express Company whether it would be possible to co-operate with the railways regarding long-distance goods and traffic. "Yes, if we got a fair deal from them," was the reply, "but at present we don't think it is. We have had several conferences, but they have not been very profitable." He suggested that co-operation should be by a ton rate, not truck rate as desired by the department. The carriers were prepared to give the scheme a month's trial.
