CANTERBURY COLLEGE CLUB'S JUBILEE. CELEBRATION IN 1936. A meeting of old Canterbury College footballers was held on March 8 to discuss the question of celebrating the club's jubilee. Owing to a difference of opinion as to the year in which this should be done, a sub-committee was eventually set up to decide what was the most appropriate date. This committee consisted of Professor ispeiglit, Messrs E. ». Webb, A. EFlower J. K Moloney, and D. J. Wilson. lhe committee met during the week, alter enquiries had been made. Mr Flower read a letter irom Mr i±. J-' von Haast, of Wellington. Mr von Haasfc stated that no doubt a lootball tlub existed at Canterbury College m 1883 and 1884, of which Professor HasJuui was president and Hugh Mathias club captain, but at the same time it was probable that members had their chief allegiance to other clubs. In ISB4 it played a number of matches including some against the first fifteens of sonior clubs. In 1885, 1886, and 1887, owing to lack of members, no club and practically no team was in existence except in the two later years in which an improvised side of students belonging to different clubs played a practice game against Christ's College and then from that game the team was picked to play Otago University. In bis opinion the real Canterbury College Club came into existence in 1888, though the colours had been worn since about 1880. Professor Speight mud a letter from Mr W. F. Ward, of Wellington, more or less bearing out the facts as set forth by Mr von Haaat. Mr Ward considered that matches were played in 1882 but thai there was no permanent fifteen until 1888. Mr Mnionev reported that he had seen Mr W. ft. Garrard, who had supplied him with the information that lhe club was affiliated to the Canterbury Rugbv Union at its meeting on March 28, 1884. After a long discussion it was decided that, although Canterbury College teams had been playing from 1880 onward, lhe first permanent side was probably that of 1888, and that although affiliation was granted in 1884, the year 193fi would lie the most fitting date to celebrate the jubilee. It was therefore decided that the May holidays of 1936 ho the date for the celebration of tho Canterbury College Football Club's jubilee. Since the above meeting, Mr W. G. Garrard has found in the "Lvttelton Times" for May 28. 188.3, that Canterbury College had played tho Ravens second fifteen two days previously and there was evidence- that they had played on a number of occasions lhat year. Extraordinary stamina saved Captain 11. S. Banner's life, off Juliu, near Bombay, India. He fell overboard from his ship and floated for three hours in a rather rough sea until he came in near shore, where a fisherman found him. He was given artificial respiration, then sent back to his ship, an American liner, in an ambulance. The irony of fate was apparent in the end of Mr Herron, an American mountain climber. He visited Cairo, Egypt, while on his way back from the Himalayas, where he had participated in arduous and dangerous climbing feats in the German Himalaya Expedition. He fell while climbing the Great Pyramid and succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
