ELECTRICITY FOR MILKING.
INVESTIGATION OF €OST. The cost of operating electricallydriven milking machines forms the subject of a report presented to the North Canterbury Electric Power Board by Mr A. Buckingham, engineer-secretary to the board. In the course of his investigation Mr Buckingham found that in many milking plants more power was used than was necessary, with a consequent high cost to farmers. The report states that the oldfashioned plant of 10 to 14 years of age was the most expensive to operate, and moat of the plants tested were of this class. The modern rotary vacuum pump was a much more efficient job than its predecessors, and no complaints had been received as to the operating cost of plants installed since the Power Board's inception. Tests showed that old plants sometimes took np to 50 to 60 per cent, more power than would a modern plant dealing with the same number of cows.
