CHRISTMAS DINNERS FOR A THOUSAND HOMES.
STREET APPEAL ON FRIDAY.
Christmas dinners for a thousand homes.! That is what the Christchurch Rotary Club hopes to be able to" provide as a result of the public's generosity on Friday next, when the club \ will make its annual street appeal on behalf of the Christmas-Cheer Fund. Actually, the fare provided for dis- „ tressed families will tide, them over practically to the New Year; but the ( distribution is made on Christmas Eve, and the primary purpose" is to brighten Christmas for women and children who otherwise would find inline season little to gladden their hearts. Parcels are made up in three sizes, according to the numbers in .the families to be served, the value of the contents ranging from 16s lOd for the smallest parcel up to 25s Id for the largest. If necessary—that is, should the public-response make it impossible to-maintain them—these values will be cut down; but -it is hoped that will not be necessary, for there is real privation in every home that is to be helped. ihe preliminary lists of deserving ca&es total well above the thousand, and social, workers are adding to them : u every day; so there is urgent need of every' penny that can be subscribed. People must not be allowed to want at Christmas time. Collectors will be on the ptreets all day on Friday, find donations may also be maide •at the central tent in the Cathedral grounds. Already the club has received several handsome private gifts, and members are giving.liberally - in Cash as well as in time and transport to ensure the success of the appeal.' The fund will be further augmented on Sunday afternoon next by. the collection to be taken at a special musical - festival in the grounds of the Christ-- . church Public Hospital.
