DR. R. ERWIN HONOURED.

Dr. E, Erwin, chairman of the St., Andrew's College Board of is held by the College Old Boys' Association was shown yesterday in "a ceremony which took place at the annual ■ prize-giving of the College in the, Caledonian Hall, when Mr B. V. Hamilton, on behalf of the Association, presented Dr. Erwin ,> with a framed photograph of himself. "We owe a great debt of gratitude to Dr. Erwin for the work he has done' on behalf of the School," said Mr 1 Hamilton. '-When at school we did not appreciate the work put in by the chairman of the Board, but we do so now." Mr Hamilton went on to. state that due to a large extent to the~services of Dr. Erwin the 1 College had grown to be one of the leading .schools in the Dominion. Fifteen years ago it was decided by a number of • Christchurch men that sueh a school was required, u ' and Dr. Erwin was chosen as the chairman of the first Board of Governors, and the speaker could assure Dr. Erwin that the old boys of the College were proud that he had been given such an honour. Dr, Erwin was not only a member of the Board but' was . also: well-known figure at the School itself, and was always looked, to by the boys. Dr. Erwin's Thanks. "It is one of the privileges of my life to be associated with St. Andrew's College and I am pleased to have been ■ in that position since its inception," said Dr. Erwin, responding. In its early days, ie continued, the College pasfced through difficult times, but after the appointment of Dr. Anderson, as headmaster, conditions improved and the .College had never since looked back. He believed that to-day education-was standardised to too great an exteritrand v because such was the case he favoured the methods of the College, which brought the scholars in touch with God. He appreciated the gift, and would ask the Board to accept it and hang it in the Board room, when such -a room was .<■■■■ provided in the College. In accepting the gift, the Bev. J. Lawson Bobinson, ftcting-chairman of the Board, said that the equipment of the College and the record of its history would be incomplete' without such a i i I I I
