Ttro representatives of tho -Girl-1 Guides called, at, the office the other j morning, - and said they had paid .a J visit to the Wolf Cub Den at Lytfcel- J ton, and with which t-Uey wore very | pleased. "Tell inc."' 1. said, "all about it. or, better still, write about it for my j Scout Notes.'-' So this' is -what- they] wrote: "(Jh Wednesday ive had' the'pleasure of -visiting,the ;Lyttelton ' Wolf Cub' Den. This . deh is mast; nrteresting.- 'lt s 'built in tho..attic of -thoold 'hospital-'-erected by Godley, mid is one of tho oldest and' most interesting buildings in" Canterbury. ' "The. den is lmng in. scrim- to represent tho cave into which the little Mow<di tho Man' Cub, fled'when pursued "V-the tiger.' Shero: Khan., There is a Coulieil Rock with, a painted tiger skin spread oyer it, and each Cub has ti little' cushion ' forming . the -council ■ circle' round, the Council 'ltoek-.- - -On those cushions are worked. jungle animals, such, as 'Bagheera,' 'Alcckx,' 'Wontolla, etc. The flay in on the right of die rock, and a herce. totem pole is on the left. Each Cub when he wins a. badge has a ribbon attached to this pole. Tho den is well equipped, having rope for knots,. Mnori plaiting, •Maori'.sticks for stick .games,-illumin-ated- Cub. .Laws,- promise and .motto, and a Cub ihuseuni. Attached to the Valla and ecilins are' painted jui'iglo signs from tho 'Jutfele- Book, and each. Cub Six ; has its 'own eorner. ''lncidentally the window of this 'Den' commands a wonderful view of Lyttelton. .We were greatly interested iii what we saw. and think tno Lyttelton Pack'is fortunate in having such a fine iuformal meeting place. "■ First-class Examinations. It was hifondcd to publish a jhsu showinpc the results .of the , tions before this; but some of the reports are not yet available. There are, however, certain features of the examination which should bo brought beforo all Scouts. The first is, that Scouts should remember the fifth Scout Law and carry it out in examinations. A Scout who put his name down as a candidate should never fail to attend the examination at the time and place appointed, or if'he canu.Ot be -there he should inform the examiner. • ' . . • Tho examiners in the' Entertainers. Budge, for instance were ■ asked to examine four Scouts, and-only one or these Scouts turned up; other examiners have had similar experiences. I hope in the future that examiners will not be obliged to make similar, comments. The examiner for the axenianslup test Teporth as follows.:—'.'T. enclose list of Scouts examined for first-class axe'manship to-day.' Twenty-six reported, ' two not Icing in uiutorm Six axes Vero among, -theni. S.M. had ;j old ..them that axes would be provided Of those brought some were from tlio home kindling block, and one or two were Troop axes All were very blunt ■ Thic work done was very rough; out with such poor axes I had to excuse ■!, a lot. All passed, having evidently 'had some instruction previously, .-and:,<Toing at Jt willingly; There was : rather a-lack-of caution among some— I note rules oi caution must T>e born for Campers': Badge, but not for ins - class; A number of the boyß fic?d a demonstration of ,'safety, hret axe. One foot was saved only through ■ the'best of luck, and others were endangered by the boys.■ straddling the ■ trees they were trimming. • Our"'Scouts -should "bo prepared for examinations as well as for everything else. They, should have thwr axes with tlt<?m and ' they should be sharp. Perhaps some of them -thought, that a bldnt nxe was. a fine example. ot. "Safety First;" and there is sometime in it., -, •
