SECOND TERM ENDS.
CANTERBURY COLLEGE. The second term of the 1931 session at Canterbury College ended yesterday. During the eleven weeks of the term the students have dond much more work than in the first term, broken as it was, by the Intef-University Tournament at Easter and by the graduation ceremony and attendant celebrations, such as the procession and the revuo, in May. Events of the second term have included several big dances, the New Zealand University Hockey Tournament in Chfistehurch, the trip of the football team to Dunedin for the match against Otago University, ftnd the preliminaries in the selection 'of the Canterbury nominees for the two New Zealand Rhodes Scholarships. Despite the many counterattractions provided by the various clubs, the majority of students have done Borious work, for the winter term with its long evenings is conducive to study. After the vacation of three weeks, tbore will be the last term, of five | weeks' lectures, ending on October 9th. ; Then the interval between that dato j and November 2nd, when the University examinations begin, will be free from lectures, bo that students will have three clear weeks to complete their year's wOrk. Those three weeks are intended for a rest from study before the strain of the examinations, but most students do almost as much work m them as in all the rest of the year. During the vacation some 'of the students will be in temporary positions, including several engineers, Who havo to put in a considerable amount of pracI tical work before they aro admitted to their degrees. Some will bd working at the hydro-electric works at Kurow, where a party from the ( engineering school will also go for an instructional camp. Two or three groupo of students intend to camp at Arthur's Pass. A great number of those from the men's residential hostels, Rolloston House and College House, and from the women's hostel, .Helen Cannon Hall, travelled home last night to the North Island, or will go to-day. Since Canterbury is the. only College with an Engineering School and a Forestry School, some of the students in these faculties will bo travelling as tar north as Auckland. Another vacation fixture is the Harrier Club's firsts/annual event with the Harrier Club at'Otago University. The race will be held in Dunedin next Saturday, six runners from each College taking part. Next term there will be comparatively few festivities. On September 12th there will be the annual steeplechase, and the Athletic Club'B spring meeting on September 19th. As a final piece of gaiety for the session the Relaxation Ball will be held at the end of the term, probably on Friday, October 9th,
