CROSS-COUNTRY RACES.
BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. NEW COURSE IN RICCARTON. Over an entirely new course in llicearton, the annual cross-country race of the Christchurcb Boys' High School was held yesterday afternoon. About 380 boys started in the race, which was over a course of four miles, and all but 20 finished The result was: — O. B. Wells 1 C. N. Thornton ... J. Croft ■ ... -J L. Ames • • ... 1 'The winner's time was 23min 2scc. He won b.y about one yard, in a closo finish. About 20 yards separated second aifd third. Winners of the sealed handicaps (open and under 16). and of the junior class will not bo decided until, the times are worked out to-day. Before this year, tho race has always been run over a course round Hagley l'ark, starting; from a point to the rear of the golf-house. Since tho school was transferred to J'iccarton, however, this course is not very convenient, and a new course has been mapped out, leading from tho school through Ricearton bush as follows: South along Stravcn road, along Kaliti street, through the Bu.sh out to Tui street, on to Puriri street, through sections and over a creek into Clyde road, along to Haniilton avenue, back to Clyde road bv tho Medbury School, across tho river, and round by Weka street into the school grounds through the back entrance. The weather was fair, although tho boys wero faced with a stiff wind on the return. The track through tho Bush was rough, but otherwise tho course was in good order. Tho big field was strung out over a long distance. A group of eight boys set tho pate, and from these the first four places were filled. WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL'S EVENT. A RECORD ENTRY. A record entry of 202 runners—over CO in excess of last year—turned out for the West CJhristchurch District High School's steeplechase yesterday afternoon. There were iO7 in the senior section and 9o in tho junior section. The course—2 3-sths miles — was round S®uth Hagley Park, including three water jumps, and several fences, finishing in the boys' cricket ground Tho senior event was won by t>. O'Brien, who completed tho distance in lomin, 20sec, and 20 yards separated the second man, W. Jesson, from the winner, Jesson's time being 15min 24sec. O'Brien made a fine sprint for the tape. Tho third and fourth to finish were about 300 yards behind the first two. , The junior event was won by .1. Kent (16min 33sec}, F. O'Brien (10 mm 3osec), nnd N Fisher (17min 2scc) being second and third respectively. The results of the sealed handicap and the House Championship will not be known until Monday.
