Orr Walker, S.M., yesterday. Charges of being found drunk in a railway carriago and traveling by rail without his fare, were preferred against Albert Joseph Bell, aged 50 years, a labouror of 40 Wilkie road, Dunedin. Senior-Sergeant 11. Martin said accused, who appeared before Justices of the Peaco had been in tho inebriates' home on two occasions, and had asked to be sent back, lie bad been drinking methylated spirits. Accused was convicted and fined £l, in default three days' imprisonment on the drunkenness charge, and was convicted on the other. Five charges of stealing £1 and another of stealing ss, were preferred against a domestic, aged 20 years (Mr L. A. Charles). Senior-Sergeant Martin said that accused was working in a boarding-houso and had stolen the money on various occasions from one of [ the lodgers. Mr Charles said that it was a sad case of a girl yielding to temptation. She had niado restitution of the money. He asked for suppression of tho name. Accused was admitted to probation for one year, the application for suppression of her namo being granted. Frederick Hood, of Lowcliffo, was fined £2 with costs 12s for falling lo give way to traffic- on his right. A fino of £1 with costs 10s was imposed on George Marsdou for a similar offeuce. A tine of £l, with costs' £l, was imposed on William Crawford Lunan, Mayfield, for defaulting in payment of the I'ecember, 1030, and March, IDS*, instalments of the unemployment levy. Defendant said that ho had now paid the Charles McAteer mado application for the cancellation of a maintenance order mado out in respect of his illegitimate child, on the grounds that he had a wifo and family to support, and could not meet his present liabilities. All tho arrears with tho exception of £G were cancelled, and the order of 10s per week was reduced to 5s per week for twelve months. In a defended civil action, Joseph Wesley, of Tinwald, claimed £SO 8s 3d from N. K. Nordstrom, of Tinwald (Mr L. A. Charles), representing balance of wages alleged to bo due. Plaintiff was nonsuited. Brunsden gave an interesting demonstration on "Silk Art," and also displayed many beautiful pieces of tho finished work. It was decided to have a competition at tho next meeting, each member to bring an article made from a sugar bag. Members were also asked to bring a limerick. On the motion of Mrs H. J. Lctham. HINDS. A meeting of St. Luke's Mothers' Union was held in the H'inds Vicarage on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Park of Christchurch, gave an interesting address on "The Upbringing of Children." Slmrpo on Wednesday evening, was well attended, when Gilbert und Sullivan's comedy, "Trial by Jury,'' was read, and musical items played. Tho severest gale felt for some years developed from tho north-west early on Wednesday morning, raising dense dust clones. Considerable portions ot newly cultivated lands were swept away aiid mayy trees were uprooted. Had it not been for the dry weather of late, great damage would nave been done in tho plantations. Moro than 100 children from tho Mothven School, accompanied by many excursionists, left by train yesterday morning on a visit to tho Christchurch "Winter Show. Captain versus Vice-Captain, in the Methven "Women's Golf Club, tho captain's team won by seven games to three. RAKAIA. The weekly meeting of the llakaia Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Methodist Church on Thursday evening, Miss S. Breach presiding over a good attendance. Tho subject for the evening was a debate, "Is the Country a Better Training Ground than the City?" The affirmative was taken by Mr 8. Wilson, Miss G. Douglas, and Mr M. Cooke, and the negative by Mr C. Nelson. Miss S. Oakley, and Mr F. Wilson. The judge was Mr M. P. Cooke, who complimented both aides on their arguments and decided in favour of tho affirmative.
