TIMARU. HOUSEWIVES' UNION. A Housewives' Union has been formed in Timaru as a result of an address delivered by Mrs A. Herbert, president of the' Housewives' Union, before an assemblago of fully 150 women ofi Thursday. Nearly all present joined tho new organisation, and tho principal executive officers appointed were:—Mrs Robinson, president; Mrs Clyde C'arr, vice-president; and Miss M. Mitchell, secretary. The Waimataitai School pupils' annual fancy dress pageant, held in Caroline Bay Hall on Thursday evoning, was a brilliantly colourful and novel spectacle, while the dances executed were of a high standard. The music was provided by the school pupils' orchestra. It was announced that tho receipts would amount to over £.70. Tho monthly meeting of tho St. Andrews Women's Institute was held in the hall' oil Thursday afternoon, i when Mrs Mills presided over an attendance of 45 members. Seven new members were elected, two being from Timaru. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mis Lyall. "Why I Joined tho Institute" was the roll call for the /Afternoon and caused much amusement. Mrs Bradbiify, of Timaru, gave a' demonstration of "barbola" Work. Mrs P. A. El* worthy proposed a vote of thanks to her for a most interesting demonstration. The winners of the competition for the best iced sponge were Misses K. Blank and O. Bell. The hostesses for, the afternoon were Mrs L. Mills and Misses W. Arden, A. Smith, and C. Bell. TEMUKA. A representative trial match to pick a. team from clubs affiliated to the Temiika and District Basketball Association was played in the Temuku Domain on Thursday afteriloon, and although it did not allow of such good combination as clubs have shown thioiighout tho season, there wero flashes of some good individual play. The Possibles beat the Probables by 13 goals to 7. Mr H. Christie was the referee. A frost of thirteen degrees was experienced in Temuka yesterday morning. It is the third occasion this winter that frost ol that intensity has been felt, abd with the exception of tWo mornings on which the barometer tegistered 15 degrees, these are among the coldest for some years. In the Temuka Domain on Thursday afternoon the primary department of tho Temuka District High School played Timaru. West jn Temuka's final game in the South Canterbury Primary Schools' . championship. Playing fine football, Temuka kept the visitors on the defence for the greater part of the game, and finally won by sik points to nil. West are leading in the competition, but this defeat will nob affect their position. Mr C. F. de Jbtix was the referee. Grocers in Temuka yesterday reduced the price of sugar to tho price ruling before the extra tax was imposed by the Government last Week. This was done in accordance with a report that the sugar company was not levying the tax immediately. The first rain of . the month was registered oh Thursday morning, when Mr W. Goodrrtan's gauge shower] four points. Conditions, through lack of rain, are rapidly becoming serious in the Temuka district, aiid with the spring approaching and no rain for the crops, as Well as a shortage of feed for dairy cattle and sheep, conditions aro likely to be the worst for the time of year for softie considerable period. Already some farmers have sent sheep away to turnips and grazing in other parts of the province, where the rainfall has been better.

WAIM ATE. Mr and Mrs T. B. Kennard, sen., of Waituna, on Tuesday celebrated the 68th anniversary of their v.vdding and received many congratulatory messages. J.lr and Mrs Kenmird have lived in this district for over lifMy years, and several of their children and grandchildren are resident here. Mr Kennard, who is aged 93, is si ill strong and hearty and able to carry out active duties on his farm. Mrs G. A. Manchester presided at: flio annual meeting of the Waimate Ladies' Benevolent Society, there being a good attendance. In the course of the annual report it was stated that, the Society had suffered severe loss through the death of Mrs S. I. Ifiteli. Mrs Manchester thanked all those who had assisted so generously during the year, and also the Press, visitors, and auditor and secretary and treasurer. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow: —President, Mrs ti. A. ALanehester; vice-presidents, Mesdames 30. C. Stud hoi me and d'Auvergne; honorary secretary and treasurer, .Mrs C. Coventry. Five applications for assistance were received and granted. Mrs W. B. Scott was elected a member of the Society. Mesdames Manchester and Adams were appointed visitors for the month, Mrs J. R. Patrick presided at; the monthly meeting of the Willowbridge Women's Institute, there being a, largo attendance. A roll call, "Your Favcurito Shrub," was followed by an interesting paper given by Mrs K. Kippenberger, "The Ministry uf Flowers nd Gardens." The competition, "Articles Made out of Old Stockings," was won by Mrs W. Fletcher, with a gymnasium dress and blouse, Miss Moira Ilollamb being second with a child's hat. Mrs Patrick won the competition for tho bast school lunch. Both were decided 1. popVar vote. Miss Colville won the "Musical Parcels" competition. Mr A. A. Shearer (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Waimate Band of Hope, which was held in the Methodist Hall. The principal speaker of the evening was the Itev. W. B. Scott., who spi '.e on "Alcohol on tho Brain." Tho following programme was given:—Recitations, X. ivenna'rd, E. Nicholas, It. Allington; tin whistle solo, E. Grut; pianoforte duet, Misses A. and 11. Head; dialogues, "The Medicine Shelf" and "Ten Little Nigger Liiillun"; mouth organ solo, L. Nicholas. To-day a party of Timaru Boy Scouts is to visit St. Paul's Scouts in Waimate. The visitors will be billeted at Waimate for the night, and after attending church parade in tho morning will roturn home to-morrow afternoon. The District Scoutmaster, District Com issioner, and other Scoutmasters from Timaru will also be among the visi'ors. Mr Lee Martin, M.P. for Haglan, is to visit Waimate on Monday, when he will deliver a political address. Mr Martin spent his boyhood in Yv aimato and was educated here. Mrs W. B. Scott, president, presided at tho first annual meeting of St. Paul's Croquet Club, there being a good attendance. The honorary sec: tary (Mrs A. E. Lewis) presented the annual report, in which it was stated that tho year had begun tfith 21 playing members, and three croquet greens had been kept occux>ied during the season. Reference was mado to the gratuitous work of Mr Scott, sen., and Mr R. 11. Whito in connexion with the pavilion, and also to Mr Scott's services as honorary greenkeeper. B Grade: St. Patrick's. C Grader Convent. Knock-out Tournament —A Grade: High School No. 1. B Grade: High School. Three cheers were given for Mr Dash, and lie replied by calling for three cheers for tho players. Following are yesterday's results: — A Grade—Konini defeated High School No. 2, 4-.1; Willowbridgo defeated Konini, 4-2; High School No. 1 defeated Waimate, 13-6. The winning team was composed of M. Cox, D. Grylls, T. Neal, P. Kane, P. Turner, M. Aitken, M. Ildem, N. Thompson, aiid R. Horler. GERALDINE. Tho hockey match ployed between "Married" and "Single" men at Geraldino on Thursday afternoon resulted ih a draw—two all. For the married men C. Knight and L. Bennington netted, and for the siugle men J. Buckley and P. McShane contributed goals. The Geraldine women travelled to Fairlie, where they were defeated by the local team by seven goals to one. Excellent weather favoured the opening of the badminton season at "Wynwood,"' llaukapuka, Geraldine, on Thursday afternoon. Members and friends enjoyed their games of badmihton and circloss, and afternoon tea. was provided. Defeat was met by all three teams the Genildino School, who travelled to Timaru to play Rugby and basketball matches. The ltugby team was beaten 17-3 At basketball the Girls' High School B team defeated the Geraldine High A team by 1241, and the Girls' Higii School 0 team beat the Geraldine High B team by 20-10. Although only eighteen points of rain were recorded at "Waitui," Geraldine, for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, the downpour did an immense amount of good and was welcomed by the farmers. Following a dry winter, several such showers would do more good than a cold southerly downpour. x\t tho conclusion of tho morning service at the Geraldine Presbyterian Church on Sunday opportunity was taken by Mr_ li. Mackenzie to present Mrs Elsie Sherratt. who has acted as organist for the past 26 years, with a roll of notes in recognition of her services to the church.
