FANCY DRESS DANCE AT LYTTELTON.
Some very attractive fancy dresses were displayed at a masked and fancy dress dance held in the St. Saviour's Sunday Schoolroom, Lyttelton, on Friday evening. The hall, which had-been specially decorated, was in keeping with the carnival' spirit- which reigned throughout" the evening. The judges, Mesdames C. W. I. Maclaverty, Guy Ronalds, and A. S. Mcllroy, had no easy task in awarding the prizes. The music, was supplied by Miss Phyllis Plimmer, and extras were played by Mr D. Gow.t and Mrs H. Oates. Prizes were awarded as follow:—Best fancy dress: Ladies, Miss E. Ayers (Cossack) 1, Miss P. Shayle-George (Naval Officer) 2; men, J. Sillers (Argentinian) 1, D. Gower (Negro) 2. Most original: Ladies, Miss T. Lester (Window); men, Mr T. Hobbs (Charlie Chaplin). PARTY AT AVONSIDE
Under the direction of Miss K. Gresson and her staff, the pupils of the Avonside Girls' High School are being taught the duty and tlio pleasure of rendering service towards others. As a practical result of this valuable lesson, they organised a garden-party, -which ■was held on Saturday afternoon in aid of the local orphanages. The fine new school buildings are 6et' in an old garden—an ideal spot for an out-door 'gathering—and the gaily decorated stalls were arranged around the lawn, sheltered by fruit trees in bloom. Hundreds of visitors attended the party and, after visiting the stalls, were shown over the new schoolrooms. The following was the arrangement of the stalls:— Afternoon tea stall, Form V. girlscake stall, Form IV. C; arts and crafts' crafts class; Is stall, Form IV.Bj sweets Form IV.A; i«.e-cream, V.A; produce! III.B; fancy work, lII.A and D. The sports mistress was in charge of -the tennis, putting, and other games, and the Sixth Form girls were 'invaluable in rendering general assistance. As a result of the pleasant gathering, the orphanages should benefit considerably.
