THE PLUNKET SOCIETY.
The monthly committee meeting of the Pluuket Society was held in the new l'lur. ket rooms, 65 Chester street. There were present Mb J. C'racroft Wilson, in the chair, Mesdames A. Bunz, A. F. Wright. P. Greenwood, A. Bloxam, E. Harris, J. Tait, C. M. Ollivier, E. Garland, J. S. Neville, H. J. Ballin, Li. Lester, 11. Boulton, P. Thomson, E. Wanklyn, Hallows Wood. F. Graham, G. Chilton, L. Wilson, E. Cordner. L. Banks, (J. Uennic, M. H. Gudby, A. McKillop, A. W. iicttven, Cecil Wood, and Misses Dunst'erd and Ward. Appreciative references was madebj' the president to the new Pluuket moms, which were being enjoyed by the mothers and babies, the committee, and the nurses, all of whom were enthusiastic about the beauty of the site and the convenience and comfort of the new rooms. Many presents had been received by the Furnishing SubCommittee, with whom economy and service had been the chief considerations.
Tiie president thanked the committee for its strenuous efforts on Violet Day, especially mentioning the excellent organisation of Mesdames C. Chilton, E. Boulton, and C. Ollivier, and the transport arrangements under Mrs E. Cordner and Mrs G. Aitken. The balance-sheet from the Cabaret Committee, per Mr Gerald Anderson, lion, treasurer, showed a profit cf £'224 ISs Id. to be added to the Society's funds. Mrs A. It. Itlosam and Mrs A. F. Wright were elected to the Hospital Ffouse Committee, vice Mesdames G. Aitken find E. Wanklyn. retired. The following delegates were elected to represent the Christehurch branch and sub-branches at the biennial conference of the Society held in Wellington i>n November 18th to 22nd inclusive: Mesdames J. Tn the event of these ladies being unable to attend, deputies would be elected before November. A grant of '£' so had been nlaced on the_ estimates of the City Council to assist to carry on the Society's work amongst the mothers and children of the Cit.v.
The Country C'luh Miniature Golf course would be opened on Saturday, October 4th, and the secretary offered the proceeds of the green fees and afternoon tea to the Society on that day. Hie members of the committee would be responsible for the arrangements for afternoon tea, and a subcommittee was set up to organise, comprising Mesdames H J. Ball in (convener). J S. Neville, E. Boulton. Hallows Wood, and A McKillop. Miss Myers had agreed to make a donation to the Society of the profits accruing from her dance recital, which would take place on October 7th at the Civic Theatre. For Karitano Baby Hospital the matron reported 13 babies admitted, 21 discharged, 11 in hospital, nine mothers admitted, nine discharged, three in residence at the mothers' cottage. The death was reported during the month of a baby who had been ill practically from birth and had died after two and a half weeks in hospital. For the City Plunket Rooms Nurse Allan reported 104 new cases, 726 visits paid by the Plunket nurses to homes. At the Pre-Natal Clinic Nurse Summers saw 23 new cases, 165 return visits were paid, and 12-0 cases were under-observation. Nurse Osborne was granted annual leave in August, and during her absence Nurse Garland relieved in the Richmond-Shirley district. Mr Tripe, of the Sydenham Dental Clinic, presented some casts of jaws for exhibition at the new rooms as a warning against babies' thumb-sucking, dummies, etc. Other gifts for the new City Rooms were received with gratitude from branches of the Society at Malvern-Tawera, Cust, Shirley-Rich-mond, Sumner, Lyttelton, Woolston, Papanui, and from Mesdames l'\ Graham. BIRTHDAY PARTY
A social gathering to celebrate the coming-of-age of Mr Ronald Smith was held at his home, Bankhead, Cust, on Wednesday evening when an enjoyable time was spent by a largo number of guests. A musical programme was provided and games and competitions were enjoyed. Supper was served in tho dining-room, where the large cake made and decorated by Miss Trustrum, was lighted by twenty-one candles, which were extinguished by the guest of the evening. Mr S. Smith presented Mr Ronald Smith with a gold key. aud the toast of the "New Man of the House" was proposed by the lley. A. Simmonds, and that of "The Family" by Mr James Catherwood.
