THE KETCH ELSIE. (SPECIAL TO TBS PBKBS.)' GBEYMOUTH, September 28. At a meeting of the directors of the South Wcstland Shipping Company, at Hokitika, on Friday, the tender ,of Messrs Ingram, ex-master, and Montague, ex-engineer, of the Elsie, was accepted for the stranded ketch, as she lies at Hunt's beach. In the event of the Elsie not being able to re-enter the southern trade, it is expected that arx'angements will be made for the steam er Gael, which is laid up at present, to do so.
Lake Brunner Rifle Glut). The following officers have been elected for the coming sea&ou, by the Lake Brunner Defence Rifle Club:—Patron, Mr J. W. Brownlee; president, Mr P. Feary; vice-president, Mr J. Willis; range officer, Mr J. Willis; trench officer, Mr C. Southorn; custodian, Mr W.' Hornby; handicajSpers, Messrs M. Mord, H. Feary, and S. Hokitika Elver. Repair* to the north training wall at the entrance to the Hokitika river have been completed by the Hokitika Harbour Bn'ud, making the old wall a stronger structure to resist floods. Football. Owing to heavy rain yesterday all Rugby Union and Soccer fixtures set
down for yesterday, and the Rugby League fixture between West Coast and Canterbury, set down for Wingham Park to-day, were postponed, the latter indefinitely. Miners' Ballot. The ballot for the Buller representative on the New Zealand Miners' Council, taken at Denniston, resulted:—P. Nelson 2(18 votes, E. Lock 136. Fight on Wharf. . Maurice Gibbons and iWilliam Hector Lake, two waterside labourers, were brought before the Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged with fighting on the Greymouth wharf. Lake was also charged with using indecent language, and with damaging a cell utensil. Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., who presided, dismissed the charge against He fined Lake 10s for fighting, 13s • for damaging the cell utensil, and £1 for using indecent language.
Borough Council. The Hokitika Borough Council met on Friday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. E. W. Heenan, G. W. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, G. Heinz, Jas. King, and D. J. Evans. The chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, forwarded schedule of amounts approved for expenditure on maintenance of main highways in No. 12 District for the current year, the amount of subsidy for Hokitika borough being £250 (£2 for £1).
The Hokitika branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association wrote asking the Council to direct that no solicitors' fees be charged in undefended cases under the motor regulations. After discussion, it was considered inadvisable to alter the present arrangements. It was resolved that application be made for a subsidy on £4O, Poppy Day money, utilised on Eolleston street drain.
Cr. Evans referred to the matter of street names being placed at the corner of streets, and said that some citizens were prepared to subscribe towards the work. It was resolved to ascertain the cost of procuring name-plates. Gold Mining at Stafford.
The Waimea Creek basin sluicing syndicate, near Stafford, is running full swing, three shifts being worked, with two men on each night shift, and three to five men on the day shift. Thii claim is worked by means of gravel pumps. The gold-bearing material is
sluiced into a sump and thence lifted a height of 30 feet through pipes and streamed over expanded metal tables. Favourable returns are being secured. The Hatters Gold Mining', Company contemplate commencing operations on their claim in Hatters at an early date. The company has a large area of alluvial country. To ascertain the scope of the gold-bearing washj it was found essential to sink a number of shafts. The claim will fee worked by hydraulic methods, a tunnel having already been driven from the Government race through Hatters terrace to stfpply the claim with water.
