Following the suppression of an outbreak o! fire on Saturday night in the front portion of the building known as the Club Sample Rooms, Herschell street, fires were found in three other places within'the building. -All'the outbreaks obviously were .deliberately started. The stock of W. E. Cooper, working jeweller, in .the front portion of the building, was destroyed. I* was not insured. A quantity of sort goods in ■ the sample rooms •at the back was considerably damaged by fire ana water. The ; stock was ownpd >by AL. Dowries and other warehousemen s agents and was insured under two policies of £4OO each in the National and Northern Offices respectively. The building, the property of the Mayor <Mr J. Vigor Brown), was insured for £ISOO with the Phoenix Office. Investigation revealed that sort goods valued" at about £SO were stolen before the fire. Fire at 2.30 on Sunday morning completely destroyed a 10-roomed dwelling at Kokotau, owned and occupied by Mr James Scott, a farmer. Mr Scott was absent in Wellington. The occupants. J. and M. Mr HaTlc and a -friend were sleeping in the place at the time and both men barely had time to snatch a few clothes and make their escape. The insurances were £BOO -on the house sad £2OO on .the contents.
