PERSONAL. (SPIOUi. TO Tax P4153.; GREYMOUTH, July 21. On Saturday evening the residents of Poerua entertained Mr and Mrs P. Buttola, who are leaving for Dobson. They were the recipients of several presentations. Mr and Mrs S. Cunningham, who are leaving Taipo, where they have lived ( for the past twelve months, to reside in Greymouth, wer? entertained by the residents in that locality, on Saturday night, and presented with a wallet'of notes. River Board. Messrs William Ernest Thiele, John J. McKay, William Searle, William Berry, Thomas Ferguson, Alfred Wall, and Francis Haddock ■ have been gazetted members of the inter-Wanganui River Board, South Westland. Music Examinations. The following passed in the Trinity College of Music examinations, held by Dr. Edgar Ford, at Reef ton: — Higher local —D. Walslemen. Senior —G. McKane. Junior—K. Turner (honoars), J. Gebbie. Preparatory —E. Bartlett (honours), E. Williams, E. Hill, M. Costello (violin), C. Hughes. Dr. Edgar Ford also conducted the annual practical examinations in connexion with Trinity College of Music, London, at Westport and Granity. At the Convert of, Mercy, Westport, the successful candidates were:— A.T.C.L.—Hilda Peterson. Senior pianoforte—Ethel Prince, Elsie Maddison, Mary Higgins. Intermediate pianoforte —Mary Maber (honours), Grace Burrell, Olive Neighbour (singing). Junior pianoforte —Evelyn Wall (honours), Nellie Gernon, Nell Comerford (elocution). Preparatory pianoforte Barbara Elliott (honours), L. Parkinson (honours), Teresa Ryan, Constance Woodhead, Joan Marr (elocution), Molhe Kilkenny (elocution). At Granity Convent the results were: Senior—Joan Davis (honours), Mona Chew. . ' Intermediate —Mary Rogers (honours), Poynton, Dorothy Thomson, Maggie Power, George Lambert. Junior —Elsa Franklin.^ Preparatory—Peggy Hill. _ First steps—Alice Moore, Wilfred Lang. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Greymouth Magistrate's Court was held to-day, Mr W. Mcldrum, S.M., presiding. John Morressy, licensee of the Railway Hotel, was charged with exposing liquor for sale and selling liquor after hours on July sth. He was represented by Mr J. W. Hannan, who entered a plea of guilty to the charge of selling. The charge of exposing liquor was withdrawn by the police. Defendant was fined £5 with . costs, 10s, and his son was fined £l,. with 10s costs for being in charge of the bar. Failing to give a warning signal before stopping his car on, Cobden bridge on June 23rd, was the charge against William James Young, who pleaded not guilty, and was represented by Mr W. P. McCarthy. The evidence was conflicting, and the Magistrate dismissed the information. William Carroll, bushman,- of Bell Hill, was charged that he procured a firearm' without a permit; that he was in possession of an unregistered firearm; that on « about June 14th, be
killed a native pigeon. Mr W. J. Joyce, for defendant, pleaded guilty and suggested that the charge of being in possession of an unregistered firearm be withdrawn, as it was'similar to the first charge.. The police agreed to this, and Carroll was fined ss, with 12s costs, on the charge of procuring a firearm without a permit. For shooting a pigeon he was fined and ordered to pay £3 10s expenses. William . Alexander Kennedy was fined ss, with 12s costs, for delivering a firearm without a permit. On a charge of disobeyihg a maintenance order, Thomas James v Leon Megher was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, the warrant not to be issued provided that arrears amounting to £49 10s are paid at the irate of £lO per month. The inspector of weights and measures (Mr F. 6. Davies) proceeded against Leach Bros., coal dealers, on a charge that on or about June 25th, as the sellers of coal contained in sacks for delivery, to purchasers,' they failed to provide the driver with properly completed tickets, as required by the Weights and Measures Regulations, 1926. Defendants, ' who were represented by Mr Joyce, pleaded not guilty. The case was adjourned for a week tc allow plaintiff to call evidence. War Pensions Board. A sitting of the War Pensions Board, consisting of Mr T. E. Y. Seddon (chairman), Dr. A. Izard, and Mr J. D. Harper, was held in Greymouth to-day, when fourteen cases were dealt with. Slaughterman Injured. A man named Mark Fisher, em- ! ployed by Mr R. Ronchi, butcher, Blackwater, met with a serious accident on Saturday evening. While killing a beast the knife slipped and severely cut his fingers, necessitating twenty-two stitches. Whitebaiters. The Inspector of Fisheries (Mr A. E. Hefford) held, a meeting yesterday at Hokitika, when he met whitebait fishermen, to the number of 35, in regard to the whitebait regulations. The fishermen made objection to the length of the season and the charges proposed of 10s for a set net license, 5s for a scoop net, and £1 for a dealer's license. Mr Hefford will report to the decisions of the meeting. Acclimatisation Society. The Hatchery Committee of the Westland Acclimatisation Society met Mr A. E. Hefford, Inspector of Fisheries, yesterday, and motored to Lake Kanieri', where the hatchery and its surroundings were inspected. Replying to enquiries in regard to quinnat ova, Mr Hefford said that though there had been a fine run of fish in Canterbury rivers they had not had much success in trapping, the fish apparently keeping to the main streams. Mr Hefford said that he was reporting favourably on Lake Mapourika .for the liberation of rainbow trout. • Motor Accident. This afternoon, a small car, driven by Mr G. Parfitt, of the staff of Messrs Cray and Co., ran off the Greymouth-to-Runanga road at Coal Creek fiat, collided with a telegraph pole, and was considerably damaged. The driver escaped with a shaking. Soccer. The Westland Football Association met this evening, Mr O. H. Brailsford (president) being in the chair. Before commencing the ordinary business, a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr J. Vaughan, of Blackball, who had done a great deal towards the encouragement of school Soccer. It was decided to communicate with the Canterbury Centre in reference to playing a match at Greymouth on August 2nd, for the Peter Dawson Cop,
Cobden Fire Brigade The annual meeting of the Cobden Fire Brigade was held this evening:, Captain Gilmour presiding. The election of officers for the year resulted: Captain, T. Gilmour; lieutenant, J. Skeats; foreman, T. Hornsby; assistant foreman, G. Anderson; secretary, L..Anderson; en-gine-keepers, G. Williams and E. O. Brailsford; auditors, H. Jackson and" J.
