The seventh decennial gathering of the Lambeth Conference of Bishops of the Anglican Communion began this morning m the library of Lambetli Palace under the presidency of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Doctor Lang. It followed the services of welcome on Saturday in Canterbury Cathedral, at which the Primate delivered an address of greeting to the conference, while the official opening service took place yesterday morning in St Paul's Cathedral, when 310 bishops were piesent. The Primate, in his address at Canterbury. conveyed his ideas of me future of the Church, which he denned as a community of f.ee and sell-' governing churches. He_ referred to the subject of Church union in South India, and forecast an autonomous position for missionary dioceses. LARGE GATHERING OF BISHOPS. LONDON, July 8. Three hundred bishops who are gathered from all over the world attended the opening session of the Lambeth Conference at Lambeth Palace. It is the greatest assemblage of bishops in London's history, and represents practically every nation. It in eludes Japanese, Chinese, and African bishops, whose dioceses are greater than Great Britain itself. The conference sits privately for a month.
