ROAD BOARDS.

AKAROA AND WAINUI. At a meeting of the Abaroa and Wainui Road Board there were present Messrs A. R. Haylock (chairman), K. McPhail, A. A. Narbey, and J. Hayward. Mr Hayward reported that the contractor was making good progress with the bridge at Robinscpn's Bay. H® had found, on stripping the bridge, that new stringers were required. The chairman reported that in company with Mr Hayward he had inspected Hickory road and had instructed the foreman to build the road up in places before metalling. He had also inspected work which Mr Broclierie had done on his road. Mr B. Cattermole had asked for some work to be done on Children's Bay road. He had instructed Mr Cattermole to do the work.—The chairman s action was approved. Mr Narbey reported let the work of making a deviation in Long Bay to Messrs R. Woodill and Shadbolt. It was left to the chairman to arrange with Mr Keefe to procure metal for Porter's and haylock's roads. Mr Stanbury waited on the Board, and asked that 35 to 40 chains of the road leading to his property be metalled—a price for the work to be obtained. . The Cbristchurch City Council wrote advising that £3l 12s lOd was the Board's share of the .heavy traffic fees for No. 16 District. Mr F. G. Wright wrote applying for metal for his road. This was left to Mr McPhail to attend to. It was also decided to have metal put on Jubilee road. Estimates showing an expenditure of £5363 16s were considered. It was said that to spend this amount a rate of' fd will be required, as other receipts were estimated to produce £1996. Mr McPhail gave" notice to move at next meeting that a rate of |d in the £ be struck on rateable _ property in the Akaroa and Wainui district. It was decided to call tendera for 230 yards of metal for Bossu road and 350 yards for Haylock's road. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £9OO. MT. HUTT. . . j The monthly meeting of the Mt. Hutt Road Board wa« held on Monday, when Mr 1. W. Buddenklao presided,

and there were' also present: Messrs R. J. S. Wilson, A. F. Marr, D. Hampton, and C. A. Campion. The clerk reported that the maintenance staff had been repairing various roads in the Highbank area, while the grader had been operating on roads adjacent, to the River Road and Highbank district. The new shingle elevator plant was now in active operation. A considerable saving in operating costs had been made, and a larger amount of shingle had been made available. The question of piping the main race at Waimarama road had been referred to the ridiiig members of the County Council. Accounts amounting to £662 were passed for payment. The Ashburton County Council advised that the piping of Waimarama road race had been referred to Messrs Carr and Jessep, and the engineer. The Council also acknowledged the Board's protest in reference to the heavy traffic fees collected . oil farmers' private lorries, and said that the substance of the protest would be forwarded as a remit to the Counties' Conference. Applications to plough road frontages were received from M. Molloy,- H. T. Ayers, and Jas. Campbell, and were granted, subject to the usual conditions. It was decided to pipe the water race crossing Orr's road, near P. McNeill's homestead at Lauriston.
