TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS.

TIMARU. Levels County Council. A keen discussion took place at the monthly meeting of the Levels County Council yesterday between the chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) and Mr W. S. Tyndall, chief engineer to the Main Highways Board (Wellington), in reference to highway matters. In reply, to a question by the chairman, Mr Tyndall said that the Highways Board would allow th 3 Council to call for tenders for the preparatory work for the first four miles of the Main North road between Timaru and Temuka. In fixing this limitation the Board anticipated that it would be called upon to lay the bitumen as soon as the first four miles were ready. The chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick): J thought there was £IO,OOO on the estimates for work in this district.

Mr Tyndall: Yes. That was so last year, but you did not use it. The chairman: I thought Mr Furkert said that that amount was continuous.

Mr Tyndall: No. I can't imagine him saying that. Mr C E. Kerr: Does it rot strike you that four miles seems a very small distance.

Mr Tyndall: You are not the whole of South Canterbury, or the only body in it. If tho Board opens up too much road we will be in the difficulty of not being able to get the paving done straight away. We simply can't get the money. The chairman: You are taking the money from us. Mr Tyndall: I didn't say that. The chairman: You inferred it.

Mr Tyndall: We lok on Now Zealand as a whole. I can see the "cockies" of South Canterbury grumbling if they had to make good damage caused by earthquakes in the North Island if such occurred. The chairman: We see that we are not really getting a fair deal. You should take the subsidy from Waimate and Geraldine Counties and give it to ns. That's only fair. We are carrying their traffic. Mr Tyndall: You are getting a great deal more money. The Levels County is only a pocket handkerchief county compared with some. If the Levels County is entitled to a subsidy of £4 to £l, the Paparua .County, which handles a considerable volume of traffic from Christchurch, is entitled to £8 for £l. Tho chairman: You should make Waimate's subsidy £2 10s for £l. A member: And Geraldine and Fairlie also. Mr Tyndall: Levels is very lucky to receive a£3 tor £1 subsidy. Some counties are doing their highways construction on a £1 for £1 basis. Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the Levels County Council was then held, when Mr T. B. Garrick was unanimously elected chain* -ji for a further year. In referring't» the cancer campaign, the chairman urged members to give the campaign their whole-hearted support. The Highways Board's representative in the South Canterbury district (Mr F. Langbein) wrote advising that the three years' paving programme in the Levels County had been forwarded to the chairman of the Main Highways Board. It was now advised that no trace could be found of this letter. The chairman of the Board had stated that all schemes entered into by "he Board for paving in the South Island were in tended to be completed, if possible, within a period of five years, and there did not appear to be any record of the Board's agreement to any lesser period for the Levels County section. The clerk was requested to write to the Board again on the matter.
