. *—■ — A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. Mr _C. E. Cross was re-elected chairman., of the Waimairi Council at the annual meeting of thai* body yesterday, and.Mr W. P. Spencer was elected deputy-chairman. Those present were Messrs O. E. .Cross (chairman), W. J. Walter, H. Bison, J. Cleland, F. L. Scott, W. P. S»»cer, C. W. Moore, J. Liggnas, T. _GNewnham, and W. G. Chapman. .. The retiring chairman stated tn» the., affairs of the county had . pfjK gressed satisfactorily during the past year. The finances were in an excellent position, the ngures proving that the various operations and ackm *j** had shown a steady increase. Tw» conditions of the roads had implored to a considerable extent. A loan for surfacing the roads in Fendaltoa had been authorised and considerable progress had been made with the work. Roads still to be dealt with included portion of Burnside road, Shirley road, and Marshland road. Mr Cross returned thanks to iba Council for the'support accorded him during the year and 1 referred good work done by the County Clerk (Mr G. S. Cowper) and staff. Members of the Council spoke appreciatively of the work done by/Mr Cross. Mr Cleland moved that Mr Spencer be the chairman for the ensuing_yearf this being seconded by Mr' WaWer, who said that it was only ri|dit_wt the chairmanship should go round. He added that Mr Spencer had been a member of the Council for twenty years and had' done good work. ■ Mr Scott moved that Mr Cross be re-elected, stating that there was no rule against such a procedure. lfr Cross knew what work was being undertaken in the county and bis experience would be invaluable The motion was seconded by Mr Chapman. A ballot was then taken and Mr Cross was elected by six votes to four. It was decided that the whole Council should meet as a committee an \be second Wednesday of each month, a full meeting bein«» held on the fourth Wednesday of each month
