Nominations for the South Canterbury Winter Meeting will close at 8 p.m. to-day.

Owners and trainers are reminded that the office of the Canterbury Jockey. Club will be closed on June 3rd (King's Birthday). Entries for Australian «vents closing on that date must reach the office not later than 5 p.m. on Monday, June 2nd. The programme for the Oamaru Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, to be held on Saturday, July 6th, provides i'oi five galloping events, comprising: Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, of IiJO ecve, 2 miles; Novice Stakes, of 100 kovs, 5 furlougs; President's Handicap, of 175 sovs, 1J miles; Highweight Handicap, of 100 sovs, 7 furlongs, and Farewell Handicap (hack conditions), of 100 sovs, 1 mile. Nominations for all events close at 8 p.m. en Monday, June 16th.

W. Stone has increased his team to eight by the following recent additions: Yearling filly by Paper Money from SaJly Brown, an imported Elderslie stud mare, a yearling filly by Tea Tray from Nuit. by Absurd, from Afterglow, and the two-year-old filly. Kockcake by Tea Tray from Taiamai. Tho trip to the Dunedin Meeting tiith Aberfeldy and Gala Day has been cancelled. The former has been lately suffering from a cold, and it was thought that Gala Day had not had sufficient schooling' to tackle the Wingatui Country. ■' Their owner, Rt W King, has recently taken over the hunter, Sea Boy, who, it will be remembered, won the Lawford Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting in August last.

! Topero has rejoined the active brigade at Riccarton. His trainer, J. Eeban, will leave for the Otaki Meeting 0:1 Saturday with Audience and Sapient and will be accompanied by A. Messervy, who will ride the pair in their engagements. ' Zeuxis with G. Salt in the saddle, Was responsible .for a. dashing display over three hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. . He and Garvary are to go to Dunedin to-day in charge of F. Christinas. Zeuxis has been a disapipointment on the flat lately, but, taking ft line through his recent schooling, he may soon make amends as a hurdler.. Gay Sonnet will be produced in the Tradesman's Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. She has got through some useful sprinting work in the past week, but at the same time will be at a disadvantage as far as racing condition goes, and she may be seen to better advantage in her later efforts at the Meeting.

Great Star will be taken south today by owner-trainer J. H. Proeser. He has done well in the past few weeks and should an apprentice allowance be 'claimed for him in Saturday's race, he will make his presence felt.

Lord -Ranald has been restricted to ! easy exercise since joining T. H. Gil. left's stable, but will be allotted more strenuous tasks on his trainer's return; from Dnnedin. He is to be nominated' for steeplechase events at the South Canterbury Meeting on June 20th and 21st,. and will also probably figure in the Ashburton programme on June 28th.

The question of the powers of handicappers to rehandic'ap a horse for having won a maiden race, with special weights, has again cropped up in re-, .gard to Miss tJrodbury, who was re- . handicapped in her Dunedin engagement for having won the Trial Plate at AehbuttoQ.. ■ The, conditions of this race set out "that candidates carried the following' weights? Two-year-olds 7-7, three-year-olds four-year-olds and upwards, 8-7. According to the; llules of Racing, "weight for age" means n: race ' 'in which weights are apportioned to horses according to their ages even if there, be penalties and allowances, and even if the races be confined to horses of any specified, age or ages." Under this wording, it is reasonable to assume that the Trial Plate

in question would be considered a weigfit-tor-age race, and as the Rules further lay down that no horse shnll _ «»rry extra weight in a handicap in consequence of having won a weight-for-age • race, it appears that the rebandicapping of Miss Bradbury is open to question. There have been at'least three similar cases lately in New Zealand, and it is evident thtit the rule bearing on the point requires a definite interpretation, and in all probability it will form one of the matters placed before the Racing Conference in July. The yearling filly by Chief Ruler from; Prophet's Mark, purchased for COO guineas at the last Trentham sales by 'Mr- E. E. Jolly, of Adelaide, has ' died. The youngster, who was broken in at -Trentham., was sent across to Sydney a week or two ago accompanied by; the oplt by Limond from Pull Swing. On arrival in Sydney the filly underwent an operation for nasal trouble, and news has been received that she died under the anaesthetic.

ifr lit. J. McManaway, who took his /Thespian .filly Habit to Australia some' jveoks Ago, hoe not had much liioe: with her up to dato, as she has been, getting left at the post in her races. The tide Jurned on Saturday at Rosehift, 'however, when' Habit, starting, At fairly short odds, Won the •vent 'which she contested. Conjuror 11. (H. Bennett) schooled •v«v the hurdles, at Trentham on Saturday, and gave a good display. He is • gradually shaping up, and may shortly' make his first public appear* •nee in New Zealand. TROTTING NOTES. The traok at Addington yesterday morning was in excellent order for fast work, but with the trestles up all the tasks were accomplished wide out. Daphne de Oro. The Shrew, Ven-' dome. pieterwah. and Nntive Prince provided interesting work over two miles. All horses went the full journey without &' mistake, the la«t half mile being run at a fast clip. There was littlir between them at the finish. Onyx was worked a mile and a half, . a task that she accomplished in pleasing fashion. The mare looks well, and die put plenty of dash into her work.

Travis Axworthy and Bonny Logan received a few lengths' start from Linkman when commencing a mile and a half task. The pace was not fast, and Linkman was soon with the other pair. From the half mile the speed was clapped on. and there was little between the trio as the post was reached.

Accumulator trotted > two miles without a mistake, and if he could be depended upon to perform this way on raoe days he would win a number of races.

Aquilin and Guy Fawkes were companions in a mile and a quarter work out, and Jolly P«t had all the better or Apex at the end of a similar journey.

Home Voyage trotted a couple of miles without a mistake, and Laplander and Sonoma were not fully extended while going a mile and a half.

After final payments were declared for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes no fewer than nineteen two-year-olds are eligible to take their place in the field for the classic race, which will be run at Ashburton on June 14th. It is quite possible that a number of. those still engaged have been left in through inadvertence, and while a good number have had racing experience, Arethusa is the only one to win a race. In Arethusa and Plying Cloud Mr H. P. Nicoll has a more than useful pair engaged, and the former's win at Ashburton on Saturday suggests that the Durbar Lodge stable will supply the favourite on the day. Red Shadow, trained bv J. Bryce, and Koyal. Chenault, from M. B. Edwards's stable, each have placed performances to their credit, and both mav be expected to improve on anything they have so far shown in public. Checkers has been something of a disappointment in his racing, but he is a smart pacer that should develop. Wheat King, owned in North Canterbury, is trained by F Holmes, but he is an unknown quantity, and though Goldworthv has so far failed to win a race she is smart filly, and likely to improve. Crimson R«*v anil Oro's Pride have both raced without adding to their reputations, but little is known of Travis Mn swell h* Travis—Axworthy nor Gold Chips bv Rev de Oro— Prospect, but both are well enough bred to do great things on the race track. Possibly the field will be reduced before the day of the race, but there is everv indication that at least a doaen well-bred young pacers will face the sfarter.

The nominations received for the Ashburton T.C.'s Winter Meeting are not so numerous as at some previous fixtures of the Club, but there are plenty of horses available to provide the best class of racing, and it would perhaps be no disadvantage if fields of ten or twelve in place of the usual twentv or thirtv were left to fight out the issue. Quality is well represented, for in the Ashburton County Handicap Wraokler, Sunshower. Trampfast, Linkman, Quality, and Tom Thumb approach the best class, and there is good material in the Winter Handicap of a mile and quarter. Handicaps for the Meeting will be declared by Mr G. Paul on June sth, and acceptances close on June. 10th. -

HORSES FOR SYDNEY.

[*HH PBBBS BpectaJ Service.] •WELLINGTON, May 28. "When the Ulimaroa leaves for Sydney on Friday she will carry 16 New Zealand horses intended for racing in the Commonwealth. They comprise the teams of, the Otaki and Opaki trainers, AD. Webster and B. Burgess, re-, V ; - ;~ . Webster for some time post has had control of the active team of Mr W. G. Stead, and be will take five over for the Flaxmere studmoster and five for himself. Mr Stead's lot are I'm Alone. Whelk, and three rising two-year-olds. They are a gelding by Lejghton from Golden Shoe, a gelding by Lord Quex from Painted Screen, and a filly by Lord Quex from Diaphragm. The first-named pair will be m the Breeders' Plate and the filly in the Gimcraok Stakes. They have been in work some time and should be well forward by the time they ore asked to race. The three-year-old. I'm Alone, is a recent winner, but Whelk is a maiden, and ■ he has had a couple of races and has shown sufficient promise to suggest he will be a profitable member of the team on the trip Web- ! ster is also taking. First Acre, Bayacre. Second Thought, Borsalene. and a pony by Kilbroney from Password. T. Webster Is staying to ride at Otaki on June> "3rd and 4th, and will follow hi* father next week.

B» Burgess's team comprises Atholspear, Spearmiss, Austerity, Werata, Bon Hur, and Lady Gen. They are a very useful lot for immediate racing in and around Sydney, while the good hundicappers are spelling, especially as the majority of them are not troubled by soft tracks. The Greyspears may even be improved by the trip sufficiently to be considered good oppugn for important Spring Handicaps. . .
