NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach this afternoon at 5.33 o'clock, and in the river at 6.47 o'clock. To-morrow the times will be 6.31 p.m. and 7.44 p.m. respectively. W.C.T.U. The opening meeting of the for the year was held in the Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. The president, Mrs H. Hall, in P re " siding over an excellent attendance or members, extended a very cordial welcome to the several visitors from the North and South Brighton branches. Miss Ballantyne will act as visitor to sick members for the coming month. A letter from Miss B. M. Harband was received asking to be relieved from the duties of vice-president, and as Superintendent of the Scientific Temperance movement. The resignation was accepted with deep regret, several of the members expressing their appreciation of the excellent work Miss Harband had done for the branch. The annual Cradle Roll picnic will bfl held in' conjunction with the South Brighton branch on March Ist. Mrs G. Weavers was appointed a vicepresident, while Mrs J. Duncan was elected Scientific Temperance Superintendent. The secretary, Mrs P. M. Mitchell, is to represent the branch at the New Zealand Conference to be held in Timaru in March. Senior Cadets. The local Company, together with its Band, resumed training after its furlough of over two months, on Wednesday, when there was a muster of 75 per cent, all ranks, under Captain A. P. Hopkins and Lieutenant B. Ward. Obituary. The funeral of the late Mr Thomas Gowan, solicitor, took place on Thursday at the Bromley Cemetery. Mr Gowan was a- native of Skerries, County Dublin, Ireland. Prior to leaving for New Zealand he was in practice at Carrickmacross, Ireland. Coming out to the Dominion some six years ago, he took up residence in New Brighton, carrying on the business of his profession in Christchurch. S.P.C.A. At a meeting held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, with Mr J. O. Jameson presiding, an endeavour was made to form a local branch of the Junior League of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but, owing to ,the poor attendance, tho meeting lapsed. New Brighton Croquet Club. In the flag match v. Rangiora the home team were defeated by eight games to one.

Beach Patrols. The Koyal Life-Saving Council, at its meeting on Tuesday, when aslccd by the Canterbury Head Centre for a grant of £ls in assisting to maintain the present beach patrols, replied that, while the movement had its entire sympathy, the limited amount available at the Council's disposal would not permit of its acceding to the request. Birthday Party. The coming-of-age of Miss Lillian Evans, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Evans, of Sea View road, was most fittingly celebrated, when upwards of eighty guests assembled in the Parish Hall to do honour to the occasion. The function was a particularly happy and enjoyable one. New Brighton Municipal Band. The local Municipal Band is holding its annual picnic over the week-end at Stewart's Gully. Demand for Houses. It is reported by a local firm of estate agents that, despite the fact that the schools had reopened and the children returned, there is still quite a good enquiry for furnished bungalows at reasonable rental.

Personal. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw) is at present visiting Nelson. The Misses Lillian and Eileen Evans (Sea View road) are on holiday at Peel Forest, South Canterbury. Mr and Mrs Shanks, of the Postal Department, Christchurch, are staying at 65 Lonsdale street. Mr T. Wiltshire (Hewitt's road, Merivale) is in residence for a few weeks on the Esplanade. Mr and Mrs R. J. McClelland (Roseberry street, Spreydon), who are visiting New Brighton, are residing at 49 Keppell street. Mr and Mrs F. Billens and family (Hill's road, St. Albans) are spending their summer holidays at New Brighton. Mr and Mrs H. G. Prebble (Springs road, Prebbleton) are amongst the holij day visitors to the beach, and are residing in Keppell street. Mr and Mrs M. Gould (Colombo street) have taken a furnished bungalow on the Esplanade for the summer season. Mr and Mrs H. C. Woodard (Gossett street, St. Albans) are on a holiday visit, and are staying at 33 Lonsdale street. Mrs Norrie, of Bowhill road, is spending a holiday in Timaru. Mr and Mrs Jas. Stewart, of Slater street, are staying at "Waratah," Osborne terrace. '

Mr and Mrs J. Hadfield, of Slater street, are staying at Osborne terrace.

Mr and Mrs H. V. Mountain and family, of Slater street, are staying on the Esplanade.

Mr and Mrs T. G. Haigh, Misses V. and I. Haigh, and Mr Leghorn, of Nelson, who are on a motor tour, are staying at "Laxey," Osborne terrace.
