BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY.

CANTERBURY EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the Canterbury Executive of the New Zealand Branch of the British Red Cross was held yesterday. Present: Mr J. A. Flesher (chairman), Lady Wigram, Mrs H. H. Smith, Miss Guthrie. Messrs H. Tj. Bowker, \V\ E. D. Bishop, and J. W. Baty. Financial statements showed that during the months of ■ December, 1929, and January, 1930, 324 *x-Service patients had received attention at the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere Hills, at Queen Maty Hospital, Hajimer Springs, at the Rannerdale Home, at the Coronation Hospital, at the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, Christchurch, at the Westland Mental Hospital, at the Christchurch Hospital, and as outpatients, and that the expenditure on clothing, tobacco, hospital requi sites, extra food, motor hire, amusements, and including grants to tho various matrons for miscellaneous purchases had totalled £221 9s lid. In addition to the foregoing, expenditure on Red Cross Club work, which provided moving pictures, furnishings, cards, newspapers, books, magazines, and other amusements, had totalled £BG 4s 8d for the month of December, 1929. . Accounts weft passed for payment as follows: —Depot, £2B 15s 6d; general, £SB 17s Id. As the North Canterbury Hospital Board had stated it was not disposed to recognise any claims for recreational work at the Upper Sanatorium iafter December 31st last, a long discussion as to the position took placeIn reply to a suggestion that Red Cross supplies be confined to ex-Service patients only, it was stated that the Medical Superintendent objected to this being done. It was finally resolved that a statement be prepared showing what is supplied by the depot to the Upper Sanatorium <jnd that the chairman of tho Hospital Board be invited to attend a special meeting to discuss the position, and, if necessary, that the Medical Superintendent be conferred with later. Sister Christian reported that the instruction of home nursing_ classes at Ross and Ruatapu was finished and examinations held by Matron Lloyd, of the Westland Hospital, just before Christmas. Fourteen students at Ross and eight at Ruatapu sat and passed, several with honours. The first aid class at Hokitika had completed its course of instruction and had been examined by Dr. Baird. There were twenty-two in the class and a good proportion had sat and gained their certificate. Junior Red Cross circles would be formed in the schools at Ros9 and Mikonui. Several cases of sickness were visited and advice and help given. It was resolved that letters of thanks be sent to Dr. Hayes for lecturing tho first aid class at Hokitika, Dr. Baird for examining the class, Mr D. J. Evans, of Hokitika, who acted as general secretary, Miss J. Davidson, of Hokitika, assistant secretary, Mr Pitt, schoolmaster. Ross, who supervised the examinations, Miss €r. Harkness, secretary at Ross, and to the head mistress of the school at Ruatapu, for help given.
