OPERATIC SINGER RETIRES
NEW YORK, December 29
Prances Alda announces her retirement from the operatic stage alter 21 years' affiliation with the Metropolitan Opera Company's staff. The directors and singers combined in a farewell reception to-day. She will devote her activities to wireless in the future.
EARTH TREMOR IN NORTH TASMANIA. LAUNCESTON, December 30. An earth tremor lasting ten seconds was experienced in Northern Tasmania on Saturday. Houses' were severely shaken. There was considerable consternation, but, apart from cracked chimneys, no serious damage is reported. COMMUNIST CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, December 30. The Communist Conference in Sydney decided to nominate candidates for the Slate Parliamentary elections in opposition to the endorsed Labour nominees, and also condemned the White Australia policy as cultiTnting race prejudice.
