SHIP BATTERED BY GALE.
A THREE DAYS* FIGHT
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BI ELECTRIC TELEGBAPH—COPYSIGHT.) HAVANA, December 29. The ancient generator and battery of an old Ford car saved the .lives of eight passengers and 26 of the crew of the steamer Santa Anna, whieh finally reached port towed behind the Athol Chief, after a hair-raising struggle with the waves, which opened the seams and sent the sea-water above the engineroom floor. The pumps were started on December 17th. After a three days' battering, all the steam available was turned into the pumping, but the water gradually gained. As the ship wallowed through the sea the radio generator refused to work, and the ship's company was faced with the likelihood of foundering. Someone then thought of an old-time "flivver" stored below. The car was stripped of its battery and spark coil, and within half an hour their S.O.S. was answered by the steamer Athol Chief, which towed them to port.
