ROWING.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The first meeting thi# year of the Canterbury Rowing - Association was held in the Canterbury Rowing Club's boathouse last evening. Mr F. D. Kesteven presided. The chairman said that he was pleased to eee so many delegate present at the opening ' meeting of the season. It behoved them to boom rowing as much as wa* m their power. 0 ... Reference to the death of Mr A. Ij. onutu was made, the delegates standing as a mark of respect. Mr Smifh, Mr Kesteven stated, was a most reliable stroke and had woiked wonders in furtherance of-the sport during his life. It was decided to send a letter of sj'mpathy to Mr Smith's son. Correspondence was received from the Akaroa Rowing Club asking the Association to support its motion that Mr G. E. WhelcE be reinstated as an amateur as he was regarded as the saviour of the AkaToa Club. After conflicting opinions had been expressed, one delegate stating that ne thought that the rest of the New Zealand bodies would be against it was decided to recommend the request to the New Zealand Council. Officers for the forthcoming season were elected as follows Selector*, Messrs Kesteven and Berry; coaca, Mr H. S. Ayres; boat committee, Messrs K. J. and G. H. Hobbs, F. D. Kesteven, and A. Evans; river committee, Messrs D. .Lee, A. Evans, Hill, and B. J. Hobbs. _ It was decided to hol>l an jnter-club eight oar race some time in the latter part oi December if a suitable course could be found. Advice was received from the Jvew Zealand Council stating that the championship events had been allotted to Marlborough for the forthcoming season. Their representative stated that the regatta would be held at Picton some time between February 32th anfl X9th. 'i'he eight-oar event, •which had been allotted to the Auckland Association, would be hei3 in the middle- of March next.
