FAIRLIE.
THE WEATHER. More spring-like conditions are now being experienced, but several cold days still give a reminder that winter is still near. The hills have a heavy coating of snow, and hard frosts are being experienced. On Thursday 11 degrees ware registered. Growth generally has been much delayed, and the spring promises to be very late. Lambing has not commenced to be general, bnt a few lambs are now to be seen in the paddocks. Rifle-Shooting. At the weekly shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club, W. Dorman won the silver button, and trophies were won by W.: L. Bourn and S. Toomes. On Monday next the final shoot of the season will be held. Fire. At about 2 p.m. on Wednesday fire broke out in the Mt. Cook Motor Co.'s garage. The fire, which was caused by some petrol becoming ignited, was got under control before much damage was done. Bowling Club. At the 6th annual meeting of the Fairlie Bowling Club, Mr F. Bussell presided. The president, in moving the adoption of the report and balanee-sheet, reviewed the work dene during the year, and asked for prompt payment of subscriptions and that members should endeavour to secure now members. Mr W. Scott endorsed the president's remarks, and seconded the motion which was carried- ' The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr W. Wreford; president, Mr T. Bussell; vice-presidents: Mr W. Scott and Mr J. Caskey; secretary, Mr H. Carlton; treasurer, Mr A. Cooper; executive: Messrs F. Williams P. Carlton, 6. Morris, C. Boulter Q.' Lyons; auditor, Mr A. Hammond; selector, Mr A. Cooper; delegate to South Canterbury Centre, Mr H. Carltongreen supervisor, Mr W. Scott. ' It was deeiaed that a ladies* evening be held in the Parish Hall during September. Mr G. Brown referred to the previous closing day, and it was decided to invite visitors to the green and make a feature of closing day for the incoming season. ORARI. A social and dance was held in the Hilton HalJ on Wednesday, when the residents of the district met to say farewell to Mr and Mrs D. Brien who are leaving for Pareora. The guests are the oldest inhabitants of
the district, having resided in Hilton for the past fifty years. Eulogistic remarks were made by Mr G. Fletcher (chairman), E. Windmill. F. Charles, and R. Patrick, while Mr H. Pearce, on behalf of the many residents, presented Mr and Mrs Brien with a wellfilled wallet of notes. The evening was spent with dancing, music being supplied bv Messrs M. Patrick and B. Meredith. Mr J. Tindall was M.C. Mr and Mrs J. Brown are on a short visit to Dunedin. Mrs F. J. Milton is spending a holiday in Timarn. Colonel and Mrs Redmond Neill are spendine a fortnight at "The Crossing,'' Winchester. At the weekly shoot of the Winchester Miniature Rifle Club, R. Moore proved the winner of Mr T. H. Langford's trophy, with 75 off the rifle.
