ROAD MAINTENANCE.

EFFECT OF MOTOR TRAFFIC. At the last meeting of the Eyre County Council the Engineer reported that the average cost of road maintenance in the County during the first eight years of the County's existence, 3.91320, had been £BSO per annum. During the six financial years, 1921-26, the cost to the Council had risen to an average of £IBOO per annum, while during the last three years, 1027-29. the total cost had reached an average of £3550 per annum. As the Council had received from the Main Highways Board and from receipts for heavy traffic license fees a sum of £1350 per annum this left a cost to the Council of £2200 per annum, or an amount of £1350 above the cost when motor traffic was only in its infancy- This additional cost to the Council being approximately equal to the amount received for motorists' contributions in various ways the En eineer suggested that the motor traffie eenerally, as far as the Eyre County was concerned, really only contributed a half share of its eost to the County, while the remaining half share was paid by the ratepayers largely for the benefit of the motoring section of the community.
