GERALDINE.
PERSONAL. Mr M. Watson, who for a number of years has been on the staff of the Geraldine branch of Pyne, Gould, Guinness. Ltd., left yesterday on promotion for Amberley. New School. On Thursday afternoon the new High School building at Raukapuka was officially opened by the Mayoress (Mrs J. Kennedy) in the presence of a small attendance of people. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr A. M. Vyte) presided, and in a few words outlined the progress that the Geraldine District High School had made, and expressed the belief that there were even more prosperous times ahead. The Mayor congratulated the committee on the energy they had shown in procuring the site and having the building erected, and jocularly remarked that his only regret was that the building was situated in the Geraldine County instead of in the borough. Colonel K. McKenzie (chairman of the Geraldine County Council) addressed most of his remarks to the pupils, and exhorted them to make the new building the nucleus of an institution of which they would grow more proud as the years went on. The Geraldine School had produced a number of distinguished citizens, and the onus was on them, as its present pupils, to see that its reputation remained unsullied. Messrs Gow find Preen (members of th«* Canterbury) Education Board) and Mr Porter (architect to the Board) also spoke. At the conclusion of the speeches the chairman handed the key to Mrs Kennedy, who declared the school open. Afternoon tea was supplied and dispensed by the High School girls. - Dance. The annual dance organised by the committee of the Geraldine Ex-pupils Association was held on Thursday night at the Town Hall. Music was supplied by Mrs Mansell's Band (Timaru). The arrangements, which were complete in every detail, reflected great credit upon the secretary, Mr W. Williamson, and his energetic committee. School Games. Teams from the Geraldine District High School competed at the football and basketball tournament which was held at Temuka on Thursday afternoon. Both football teams were defeated in the first round, but the junior basketball team reached the semi-finals before being eliminated.
