BOXING.
CHRISTCHURCH AMATEUR CLUB. A meeting oi the committee of the Christchurch Amateur Boxing and Sports Club was held on Tuesday. Present: Messrs K. H. Livingstone (chairman), C. P Agar, C. H. Taylor, j«n., J. -D. Hutchison, A. J. Fraser, and H. K. Sampson (honorary secretary;. It was decided to award gold medals to tho winners of the various novice weights. The New Zealand Boxing Council advieed that the championships would bo held at Grey mouth on August 29th, 80th, and 31st, aud that entries would close at Greymouth on August 17th. It was decided to hold the matter over until after the local championships had been decided. Mr J. D. Baybutt was elected a member of the committee in the place of Mr E. Beanell, resigned. The eeoretairy reported that Webber, of ; Otago, who had been matched with McKano. advised at 5 p.m. on the day of the con- ' test that bo could not attend. The secretary was instructed to place the facts before tho Otago Boxing Association, and ask it to enquire into the matter and report. The following officers were appointed for the amateur championships, to be held at the Caledonian Hall on July 16th:—Beferee, Mr G. E. F. Kingscote; judges, Messrs J. D. Hutchison, J. D. Baybutt, W. E. Mouldey, J. Corcoran.; timekeepers, Bt. P. C. Crooke and Mr K. L. Kennett; glove and scale steward, Mr N. McGrilivray. Championship Tournament. Great interest is being taken in the amateur championship tournament, which will be held in the Caledonian Hall on Tuesday next. At the conclusion of this tournament, the Chrißtchurch Sports Club will select the Canterbury representatives for the New Zealand boxing championships. As all th« leading amateurs have entered for the tournament, the boxing should bo interesting and exciting. Amongst those who have entered are Colin Gardiner, Twist Jaggers, W. Carey. Steve McKane, T. Green, A Thompson, G. Wright, Argyie, and several other prominent amateurs. Many thrilling and exciting bouts are assured. The box plan is at Lange's, United Service Buildings. An Auckland message says that at the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture yesterdav, the annual report stated that the institute, in conjunction with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, was actively engaged in research work in connexion with citrus fruits. Work was being carried out in Auckland under the direction of a committee representing the Department and the institute.
