FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED.

ASHBURTON TRADERS SUFFER. A man was arrested at Rakaia yesterday afternoon following reports made to the Ashburton police of frauds being perpetrated upon business people of Ashburton by means of valueless cheques. It is alleged that a man visited one of the banks, represented himself to be "the Honourable Mr Mason, of Gore, ; ' and obtained a cheque book. He wrote several cheques, it is alleged, and tendered them in three or four business places which tie visited. The arrest was made by Constable A. C. White, within an hour of complaint being made to the police. The man now in custody will appear in the Court at Ashburton this morning.
