Admiral Bingen disappointed at Forbtirv Park, but mav do better on this occasion, while Ambition and Nelson Parrish are two voung trotters of ability. Admiral Bingen, Ambition, and Sunspeck appear possibilities. ADVANCE HANDICAP (in harness), of 130 sovs. 3.40 c'ass. l}m. Kautoma . . scr Kate Logan .. Both have excellent form to recommend them and possibly Wrackler may prove the better. Linkman won well at Hawera Mid Ashburton, and is assured of strong support, while from the back mark Dundas Boy cannot be left out of consideration. Omaha, too, is a good staver, and Evelyn Locanda, Lingfield, and Shadowland will all be well supported. In a very open race, Wrackler, Linkman, and Dilworth may finish in the places.

NOTES FROM WANGANUI.

[THB PKEBS Special Service.] WANGANUI, May IT. The disappointment of thf race for the Wanganui Steepleehaae w«i Mutu. He tailored without any freedom, and in addition did not nivo • very good «*hibition of jump inf. He wet a lone way back by the time the Arat mile had been completed, and •Ithoofh he made wp some ground ia the

concluding stages he finished a very moderate fifth. ttoman Abbey is such a splendid jumper that it was surprising to find mm coming to grief after having completed only one of the three circuit* in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Th® track was soft, and it transpires that in taking off he was standing <jn a piece of false ground. His hind legs slipped from under him, so that he had really no chance of doing anything else but fall.

The three-year-old gelding if illais, by Leighton—Marty, has been _ purchased by Mr Cecil lioaisson. and ran in his colonrs in the Borough Handicap yesterday. Mister Gamp created a very favourable impression by his win in the Century Hurdles Handicap. He had quite a good field opposed to him, and he did his work really well at the right end. He made a faulty jump at the last fence, otherwise his display was a good one. Hister Gamp will be one of the favourites for the Great Northern Hurdles if he goes to Ellerslie. He fell in the race last year, but that was due more to his taking on fence for fence with Bean Cavalier, for he had in training schooled as well as anything on the track.

There is no need to emphasise the previous deeds of Comical as a hurdler, which culminated in a victory in the Grand National two years ago. During the interval Comical was put to and failed at steeplechasing. His run in the Century Hurdles was his first start over hurdles since the National, and it was an entirely new Comical that we saw Never in all his career has be given such a splendid exhibition of jumping as was witnessed yesterday, cor has any hurdler of note of recent years been so clean and fast at his fences. Not only is Comical now "made" as a jumper, but he is In first-class condition, and will be a power to be feckoned with in the Great Northern Hurd'es and subsequent important events. Nukumai gave quite a good display in the Wanganui Steeplechase, with the exception of the brush fence at the hn'fmile, which pulled him up each time. He carried within a pound of 12st. and all things considered it was a promising display.

Rangi Sarto showed distinct promise as a steeplechaser last season, and his race in the WsnganuS Steeplechase Is an indication that he will have to be reckoned with even in the best company later on.

WharnclifPe came from Rif carton to Wanganui recorded as being backward, but he ran a very good race in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and in another stride wou'd have obtained third money. Provided Wharncliffe stands up to his work Mr J. S. Barrett may yet have the pleasure of seeing his bad luck in steeplechasing broken The Te Awamutu-owned and trained Cybele was well backed in the Hack Hurdle Race yesterday. She lay too far out of the running early to have any chance, but she, finished as well as, if not better than, anything in the race. Cybele is likely to improve on this performance very shortly No recruit to hurdling has impressed the critics more than Tiega. Benzora is in '"first-class order at the present time. At Egmont he came with a very late run to run second in a six furlong race. In the Connolly Handicap he was raced to the front and then dr.fted back. Benzora is about the best prospect for an early win that one could have at present. Bisox, as the result of a good race at Hawera, was established favourite in the Connolly Handicap, but she was never in the firing-line and finished last. It is not uncommon for the supporters of a good horse to back it too early, and Bisox will do a lot better when more seasoned.

On the rsct run by the Paper Money gelding Otairi in the Hack Hurdles yesterday, he will earn money at this branch of the business. One of the easiest wins at Wanganui was that of Coolmint in the first division of the Purua Hack Handicap. He should be hard to beat again next start. Many people were surprised that Flying Binge, whose recent form has been excellent, should have been only ninth favourite when she won yesterday. Her supporters owe their good dividend very largely to the fact that it was a divided race, and the solid support accorded Propaganda in the same division. The feature of the jumping events yesterday was the riding of A. Hobson. He had three mounts for a first on Haidos, a second on Rangi Sarto, and a first on Mister Gamp R. W King expected a good race from Aberfeldy In the Century Hurdles, but he went out in front with Comical, and being outjumped at every fence lie soon had enough and finished last. He will probably do better when different tactics are adopted. Rttannl ran a good race in the Connolly Handicap, finishing fourth, and on this showing should not be iong in doing better. Black Duke was very unlucky in the Borough Handicap. He was drawn next to Joy Bird, and in concentrating his attention on the mare Didham, the rider of Black Duke, was caught unawares by the rise ■ of. the barrier. He lost at least twelve lengths, and was less than half that distaace away at the finish. Value was well backed In the Boroogh Handicap on the strength of good track work. She showed • lot of speed for fivp furlongs, and although she ran off the course at this stage, it did not look as if the ground she lost affected her chance. Atareria ran a creditable race in the Century Hurdles, and although he had no chance with the pair in front of him, he shaped as If he might win a good race later on. Joy King's first effort as a hurdler was not very impressive. With his pace he was being very hard held in the early part of the race, and when he hit the fence in front of the stand, lie quickly showed a dislike to the remaining portion of the job. There Is no reason why, with experience. he should not make a good hurdler. Puwhero improved to run third In the Wanganui Steeplechase, hut he had no chance of winning. Possibly he might have done a bit better had the fall of Roman Abbey not left him so early in the lend, but at the same time It looked as if the distance was just a bit too far for him.
