A NATIONAL ANTHEM.
TO THS EDITOR OF THE PSBSS. Sir,—ln reading "Obiter Dicta" in Saturday's Press I noticed that Archbishop Averill, in an Anzac Day address, deplored the lack of New Zealand poets and musical composers and the absence of a New Zealand National Anthem. I presume the Bishop, not being a southerner, would know nothing of Tom Bracken's "God Defend New Zealand," set to music composed by John J. Woods, still residing in Lawrence, Otago goldfields district. The composition (words and music) was dedicated to the late Marquis of Normanby. then Governor for New Zealand, 'during the 'seventies. Th© anthem (both words and music) is very popular and well known in th© south and used at all sorts of functions. The English words are translated into Maori, and both are printed under the music. The old firm of Charles Begg and Co. have had several editions printed. 1 happen to be a visitor to Christchurch, hence my desire to give honour to whom honour is duo. — Yours, etc., SOUTHERNER.
