AUCKLAND TRAMWAYMEN.
I « STRIKE RUMOUR DENIED. (press association telegkam.) AUCKLAND, May 4. A rumour that there is a possibility of a tramway strike at Auckland is authoritatively denied. It has been suggested that a strike might evolve as a protest against the pronouncement by the chairman of the Transport Board that efficiency in the service was to be the paramount consideration, when retrenchment was under review and that . the established system of appointment and relegation by seniority was to" be abolished. While mass meetings of tramwaymen will be held on Thursday next; it is denied by their representatives that there is anything in the suggestion concerning a strike. The meetings, they state, are called to discuss among other matters the attitude of the tramway management in regard to retrenchment, particularly as it applies to seniority.
The Transport Board has agreed to meet the union representatives on Tuesday to discuss a new agreement to be submitted by the union.
