FENDALTON ROADS.
20 THE EDITOS O? THE PRESS, Sir,—ln answer to Mr H. J. Horrell's letter in your issue of the 4th inst.—l was asked at the meeting of ratepayers if the County Council had specified which roads should be done first. Perhaps I should have answeria more fully than 1 did. I said: "Probably the Fendalton road would be done first and then perhaps Clyde The only condition of priority of work embodied in the specifications, whien were drawn up in December last, was that the 16 chains of Fendalton road between the North Park bridge and Holmwood road should be done first. This condition was made because it was thought that sanction would be obtained from the Local Bodies' Loan Board to take a poll early in January. As the Carlton bridge was to be closed for six months, and the time for being able to lay hot-mis roads short, it was considered wise to do that strip first. However, there was considerable delay in obtaining the :iec3ssi.rj sanction for the loan. The order of tbc work, as yet, has not been decided upon. When the loan is carried and the plans and specifications finalised, the County Council will go thoroughly into the question. It is only by receiving such suggestions as Sir Horrell has brought forward that the true merits of priority can be weighed. At the same time, ratepayers will realise that it is quite impossible to expect a contractor to do a strip here and a strip of road there. There must be continuity of work. All the roads cannot be first, but ratepayers can rest, assured that their County Council will give careful consideration to this most important point, and will appreciate any suggestions brought forward. 1 thank Mr Horrell for giving me this opportunity of making this explanation.—Yours, '' HENRY KFfSQN. )
