THE ELECTIONS.

MID-CANTERBURY SEAT.

HON. MR NOSWORTHY'S

POSITION.

A cable message from the Hon. Mr Nosworthy, Postmaster-General, rer ceived yesterday by Mr R. Galbraith, Mayor of Ashburton, clears up a mis* understanding that arose from tho cable message received by Mr Gal* braith last week in which Mr Nosworthy announced that he would be a candidate for the Mid-Canterbury sent. , The text of Mr Npswprthy> first cable message was not given in the telegram from Ashburton, published in The Pees 3 of last Tuesday, the effect of the being given thus: "The Hon. Mr Nosworthy . . • • announces definitely that he will b& a condidate for Mid-Canterbury." This appeared inexplicable at the time, as Mr Nosworthy before leaving for Canada left it to Mr Coates to decide whether he (Mr Nosworthy) or Mr D. Jones, M.P. for Ellesmere, should have the Reform nomination. The cablegram seemed to indicate that Mr Nosworthy had taken the matter out of Mr Coates's hands. The cable message received from Mr Nosworthy yesterday clears up the mystery. Its text follows: "Word 'only' omitted from my cable, which should read 'Definitely candidate Mid-Canterbury only'--meaning not available for anv other electorate.— Nosworthy." It will be recalled that some of the Reform supporters in the Hurunui electorate expressed a wish that Mr Nosworthy should he asked to allow himself to be nominated for that seat and that Mr Coates was asked to for. ward the request to Mr Nosworthy, which he did. It now appears pla>n that Mr Npsworthy's cable message of last we«k was intended really as a replv to the Prime Minister's cable to him" referring to the Hurunui seat, and, if it had been transmitted as Mr Nosworthy intended, it would have appraised the Prime Minister of the fact that Mr Nosworthy would be a candidate only for the seat and, consequently, would not be available for Hurunui. Mr Galbraith understands yesterday's message to mean that Mr Nosworthv still leaves the decision regarding the Mid-Canterbury seat to Mr Coates. KAIAPOI ELECTORATE. MR J. W. BEANLAND TO STAND. In response to many earnest requests and with the'assurance of hearty support from all parts of the electorate Mr J. W. Beanland has consented w' nomination as a Reform Party candidate for the Kaiapoi seat. _ Mr Beanland is a favourite with all classes of the community, and always polls well. Be la at present a member of the Christchurch City Council, the Christchurch Drainage Board, andtne Citizens' Unemployment Committee. Although several meetings of the Reform Party supporters m the elector, ate have been held recently, no finaUty has been reached regarding the selection of a candidate. MrL.-WM» was invited to contest the seat, but tf is understood that sufficient promises of support wera not forthcoming to war, rant his giving an immediate reply. . If Mr Evans consents to stand it will now be necessary to tiike a ballot jn. accordance with the rules, or tlie ; Party organisation.

HURUNUI SEAT. A conference of Reform supporters in the Hurunui electorate iB to be held at Amberle? on Thursday afternoon for the purpose of selecting a candidate to stand in the Party's interests at the forthcoming General Election. In addition to the names already mentioned, it is understood that Mr David Doak, of Omihi, may be mentioned as a candidate, as a number of his supporters in the Hawarden district have decided to ask him to consent to nomination. '. ~ . At Rangiora to-morrow night a meeting of those in the HJurunui elec. torate in sympathy with the aims of I the Labour Party are to meet to con- , sider the questipn of nominating a candidate to stand in the Labour Party's interests.
