Captain Henry made suitable reply. The Minister for Education (Hon, Mt Wright) v.-ill arrive in Temuka early this afternoon. He will inspect the Salvation Army Boys' Homo, the Temuka District High School, and the Technical School, and continue his journey north later in the afternoon. Mr and Mrs W. A. Stapleton and family will arrive in Christchurch today from Temuka, and will probably go on to Akaroa. Temuka Fire jorigade. The 52nd annual i_jutiug of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade was well attended. Captain J. Henry presiding. Thj annual report stated that seven tires had occurred duriup the year, but none of them had been serious. The V •■igadc started off the year with a credit balance of os 9d, bui had finished up with an overdraft of £7 Is 3d at the Bank of New Zealand. It was explained, however, that if rents owing to the brigade for hire of its meetingroom were paid there would be a small credit balance. Allfrey (reelected); treasurer, ex-Captain Hancox (re-elected); caretaker. Fireman W. Ives (rejected); senior branchman, Fireman Ives (re-elected): junior branchman, Fireman Frisby (re-elect-ed); hon. surgeon, Dr. F. A. Scannell (re-elected). At the conclusion of the business of the meeting the Mayor and councillors were the guests of the brigade at a social gathering. Eugby Football. The South C'auter ury Rugby Union has granted permission to the Temuka Club's fourth-grade team of last year to play a match at Rangiora on Easter Saturday. The Management Committee has discussed the question of playing the Beri Cup matches at Temuka, and consideration has been deferred until later in the season. Cricket; - During the season just closed tho Temuka Cricket Club played 18 with the following result: — Won 9, drawn 5, lost' 4, points 23... " Coventry- headed the batting averages with. 30.5, his total, runs for the season being 494. - ' His highest score in any .innings was'lol. Austih r with an average of -21.3, eomes second in the hatting averages, and others .with double figure averages are: Dwan 11.6, Salmon 11.4, Edwards 11, Williams 10.7, de Itenzy 10.3, Gaffaney 10.2. Edwards heads.the bowling averages, having taken 16 wickets at an average cost of 7.9 runs per wicket. Williams and Dwan, however, have better figures, the former having taken 41 wickets at a cost of 8 runs apiece, and the latter 42 wickets with an average of 10. Borough Improvements. The new tar-boiler imported by the Temuka Borough Council has come to hand, and is already proving most satisfactory. , Bowling. Three ritks from the Temuka Bowling Club will attend the Easter tournament at Oamaru, and members will take part in the singles on Thursday, April 14th; rinks, Friday, April loth; pairs, Saturday, April 16th. The Temuka rinks, which will leave here next Wednesday afternoon, are as follows: J. Gouriey, J. B. Sinclair, C. L. Fraser, and T. Edwards (s). F. C. Roberts, W. McMillan, 6. Perce, F. Smith (s). B. Levens, F. -A. Joynt, T. Harvey, sen., and W. J. Keys (s). • ' j ! Half-Holiday Question. A burning question in Temuka — whether the weekly half-holiday shall be observed on Thursday or Saturday afternoons —is to be decided on April 27thj when, for the first time, a poll of district electors of the borough will be taken on the subject. Opinion is very divided, "but those in favour of Saturday are quietly confident that they will carry the day. The weekly half-holiday at present is observed on Thursday. Good Pishing. Fishing in the Opihi, just above Milford Lagoon, on Sunday evening, one of a party of anglers from Timaru landed two fine trout, one weighing •about 101b and the other 6£lb. The fish were taken within a few minutes of one another. Art Union Results. .The. following are the results -of the art unions at the Druids' bazaar, Temuka:—Art cushion, A. R. Richardson, care H.M.S. Diomede; oil painting,- P. J. Prendergast, Ashburton; fire screen, F. Odell, Enfield; trousseau, A. A. Prendergast, Ashburton. In the lamb weight-judging competition, F. Phillips judged the correct weight, 44Jlb.

PLEASANT POINT. The annual meeting of the Pleasant Point Football Club was attended by a good number of members. Tha president, Mr L. Laurenson, presided. The report and balance-sheet, which showed the club to be in a very healthy state, were adopted. The following officials were elected for the year:— Patron, Mr F Morrison; president, Mr L. Laurenson; club captain, Mr J. Dossett; field captain, Mr V. Dossett; vice-captain, Mr A. Saunders; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr G. W. Wakefield; committee, Messrs W. Wills, B. Felton, J. Iveane, A. Saunders, A. Xing, J. Dossett, and S. Wakefield; advisory committee, Messrs Felton, J. Dossett. and secretary; delegates, Messrs Wakefield and Dossett. The committee was instructed to arrange for a game on Easter Saturday and to have the Domain electrically lighted for evening practices. Some rather sharp mornings have l>een experienced lately, and the weather generally has been colder than usual for this time of the year. There is a good coating of snow on the ranges and farmers would like to see this removed and a spell of fine, warm weather.
