RACING AND TROTTING. * OAMARU CLUBS IN NEGOTIATION. iSrF.CUL TO "the teess.") OAMARU. May 3. A scheme which would be greeted Tvii.il fnvour from all classes ot' the sporting community throughout North Otago is nt present under discussion by the Oamaru Jockey Club and the Oamaru Trotting Club. These two clubs have separate racing courses, practically opposite each other. Soino considerable time ago the two clubs entered into negotiations to allow tho Trotting Ciub to race on the Jockey Club's course. It was understood that certain improvements would be required to be done to the course before a trotting meeting could be held. The Trotting Club got an expert down from Christchurch to inspect the property, and he gave an estimate of the cost of shifting tho buildings and improving the course. The estimate was something like £BOOO, and was considered too high, so negotiations fell through. Since- then, both clubs have benefited by about 327500 esich through the Grand National Kafile. The suggestion has again been raised, and a special meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club was held on Monday to discuss tho question. Mr J. R. Mitchell presided. It was ultimately decided to appoint a sub-committee to meet the Oamaru Trotting Club, with a view to reopening the negotiations. A special meeting of the Oamaru Trotting Club was also held on Monday evening, when a letter was received from tho Jockey Club asking that a meeting be called to receive the deputation to consider the question.
